Marine Larval Ecology LaboratoryPrinciple Investigator and Supervisor: Brian Hentshel, Ph.D.In the second semester of Marine Larval Ecology, we were responsible for designing and carrying out a study measuring the effects of food variation on a species of marine invertebrate larvae. Our research was funded by a grant awarded to Dr. Brian T. Hentschel from the National Science Foundation. Our target species was the dorid nudibranch, Diaulula sandiegensis. We chose to test food variation against larval growth. We fed the larvae a combination of the microalgaes Isochrysis galbana and Pavlova lutheri. For growth, we measured both shell height and shell length. Data were then subjected to ANOVA analyses, which revealed no statistically significant difference between food treatment groups and larval growth. Future projects could include using larger sample sizes as well as including other factors, such as temperature fluctuation. Show less
