In this generalist role I gained experience in the provision of corporate advice, with a particular emphasis on legislative and policy compliance by the HHS. I advised on general health law matters, including issues involving consent to medical treatment, guardianship and health attorneys. • Office of the director of child protection litigation (odcpl)

      Sept 2016 - Feb 2019
      Lawyer

Staff of the ODCPL are responsible for supporting the Director of Child Protection Litigation to perform the statutory functions of his role. My primary responsibility as a lawyer with the ODCPL was to prepare and apply for child protection orders, and to conduct child protection proceedings in the Childrens Court of Queensland on behalf of the Director. This involved me independently assessing the evidence gathered by Child Safety Officers and determining whether it supported the making of an application to the Childrens Court for a care and protection order.I appeared on child protection proceedings in the Childrens Court on a weekly basis and represented the Director in multi-day hearings involving witness testimony. I also professionally and ethically negotiated legal outcomes with other parties at compulsory conferences, at all times ensuring the child’s safety, wellbeing, and best interests remained paramount.I was primarily responsible (at various times) for the local service delivery needs of the Caboolture, Maroochydore, Gympie and Rockhampton areas. I developed strong and constructive working relationships with Child Safety staff, Magistrates, court staff and legal representatives in each of these regions. Show less

    • Knowmore legal service

      Feb 2019 - Mar 2020

As a lawyer at knowmore Legal Service, I worked in a multi-disciplinary team environment to provide culturally safe and trauma-informed legal services to survivors of child sexual abuse. I autonomously managed a high caseload of legal matters which required me to sensitively interview clients about their experiences of sexual abuse and provide them with advice on available legal options. A large part of my role was assisting clients to seek redress under the National Redress Scheme. I prepared redress applications for clients, and frequently drafted supplementary submissions on the interplay of legislative provisions where a client’s claim was particularly complex. My role also involved advising clients when they received an offer of redress under the Scheme. I worked collaboratively with social workers, financial counsellors, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement staff to facilitate wrap around support for clients during their engagement with the legal service. • Royal commission into violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability

      Mar 2020 - Oct 2022
      Assistant director

As Assistant Director in the Engagement Branch of the Disability Royal Commission, I contributed to the design and implementation of the Commission’s external-facing activities. My primary focus was on assisting the Commission to strategically deliver the national private sessions program during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. I engaged with a diverse range of people from the community, including people with disability, advocates, whistle-blowers, family members, and support people. I also built and managed professional relationships with each of the Commissioners, as well as members of Disability Representative Organisations and other agencies external to the Commission. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of tailoring my modes and levels of communication to engage in meaningful and effective ways.I drew heavily on my experience and skills in trauma informed and multi-disciplinary service delivery to ensure that people were able to safely share experiences of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation directly with one of the Commissioners in a private, confidential and supportive setting. I facilitated and attended more than 150 of these sessions, including face-to-face sessions held in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth. I prepared detailed, accurate and timely reports of these sessions so that each individual experience shared with a Commissioner could inform the work of the Commission more broadly.I was called on to act as Director of the private sessions team for multiple periods during 2022.
