I have been the Deputy Director of Intellectual Property Law and Policy at the dti since 2013. I am also an admitted attorney. My passion is Intellectual Property. I pride myself on excellent stakeholder management as I am responsible for various portfolios.I am involved in research activities and have participated at various national and international forums regarding IP. I have been involved in several key legislative processes including the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment Act, the draft National Policy on Intellectual Property, Performers Protection Amendment Bill and the Copyright Amendment Bill. I participate in a wide range of education and awareness initiatives on IP. My key responsibilities are the development of policies pertaining to IP and the amendment of IP legislation as the dti is the custodian of all IP laws. I work closely with Companies and Intellectual Property Commission(CIPC) and serve on several IP committees. I amalso responsible for applications in terms of Section 15 of the Merchandise Marks Act where permission is sought to protect mega events and prohibit the use of certain marks; the most notable protections granted are the FIFA World Cup events and protection of marks such as the NDP 2030 logo, the BBBEE commission Logo and the SASCOC logo to mention a few.
