  OBJECTIVES: This study aims to document the clinical features of inguinal hernia (IH) in the pediatric population, assess the associated risk factors for incarcerated hernia, evaluate its recurrence, and investigate the occurrence of contralateral metachronous hernia.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analytic study involving 922 children diagnosed with IH and operated on between 2010 and 2013 in our pediatric surgery department.RESULTS: Among the patients, 143 were girls (16%) and 779 were boys (84%), with a mean age of 2 years. The right side was more commonly affected (66.8%, n = 616). Incarcerated hernia occurred in 16% of cases, with 33% of neonates experiencing incarceration. Incarceration was more prevalent in males (15.5%) compared to females (2.09%). Surgical repair was performed using the Forgue technique. Postoperative follow-up revealed four cases of hernia recurrence and 33 cases of contralateral metachronous hernia, with 7.7% occurring in females and 2.8% in males. Forty-five percent of these cases were in infants. The mean follow-up period was 4 years. Incarceration was associated with several risk factors, including female gender, prematurity, and initial left-sided hernia repair.CONCLUSION: Inguinal hernia predominantly affects male infants. Risk factors for incarceration include prematurity and male gender.
