      The project focused on advancing the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides as microbial cell factory for the production of isoprenoids. Such an improvement was obtained in a three-step approach, resulting in 5 research articles and 1 review:1) We optimized the technologies for studying and modifying this species withn the design-build-test-learn (DBTL) concept. These technologies include novel 13C-metabolic flux analysis and CRISPR/Cas9 toolkits.2) We studied the physiology and the metabolism of the microorganism using the improved DBTL cycles, obtaining novel insights on the biology of this species.3) We used the knowledge generated for increasing titers, rates and yields of isoprenoids via rational engineering of R. sphaeroides.
