I assisted Sahil Vora in studying planar interfaces, specifically the air and water interface. This two-phase interaction is studied using functionalized and non-functionalized carbon nanotubes. To this date, there are no mathematical equations which describe the rheology of a nanoparticle-laden interface. The objective of the project is to eventually develop these relationships and understand the fundamental behavior of nanoparticles at multiple-phase interface.http://ma.engr.uconn.edu/

      Jun 2012 - Aug 2012
      Laboratory Technician

I was a laboratory technician for Henkel's Loctite facility assisting Application Engineers in their various projects. Companies working with Loctite would request adhesives for a specific application and many times the Application Engineer working with that company would write up a draft for experimentation to test certain adhesives for the proposed application. Most of the tests conducted revolved around tensile strength or compression strength although there is a plethora of ISO certified tests that can be conducted. The main instruments of experimentation were Instrons, which specialize in testing material properties. Fragrance has become an increasingly important aspect of laundry detergents over the past decade. Consumers now associate cleanliness with fragrance and not necessarily actual cleaning performance. My project for the summer had me analyzing fragrance components in various detergent brands. The main instrument for experimentation was Gas Chromotography Mass Spectrometry. The majority of fragrance components are volatile organics, making GC/MS an effective means for analysis. Upon analysis of the fragrance spectrums for the various detergents, a fragrance booster aimed at improved deposition, retention, and damp aroma was created based off of trends in successful fragrances analyzed. Several prototypes were constructed and tested for these characteristics. Albeit the boosters did not increase fragrance preference at all, they did improve upon retention in cotton fabric.
