Government run training scheme learning the basics in vehicle body repair and refinishing and block release to both Langside College and Park Automobiles in Dumbreck where I got my apprenticeship in Spray Painting when the training course ended.

Time served Spray Painter. I had typical responsibility of an apprentice making sure the workshops were clean and tidy and making tea for what seemed like a 100 men three times a day when in fact it was only about 15-20.I enjoyed my apprenticeship and received excellent training from the tradesmen who taught me.Four year apprenticeship that seemed to go by in the blink of an eye,I must have done something right as I was offered a full time job at the end of my four years !!

I basically ran the bodyshop I had to ensure that all repairs were carried out properly and chose and tinted the colour to be applied and ensured that the finished product was of a high standard before the vehicle was valeted and place in the lot for sale.I was also tasked with the bodyshop procurement which I hadn't done before I had to source all the dry and wet goods and ensure that the costs were being monitored at all times, little did I know at the time but that was to be a large part of my future career. This was also the first time I had other tradesmen in my charge. I was responsible for all the day to day running of the workshop and paintshop ensuring that the work was done within time and cost.I also dealt with the sites Health & Safety,ISO and any problems that may occur with any of the work in progress. My duties included being able to identify different types of substrates, knowing how to prepare and refinish that substrate, working to customers specifications and being able to work from drawings and measurements and to transfer this information onto other sprayers under my control.Problem solving and colour matching were high on my agenda as well as ensuring that the other sprayers were complying with all the latest Health & Safety requirements.
