      Sept 2013 - Dec 2013
      Intern

While I'm not a Republican, I appreciated the opportunity to be on Capitol Hill and represent other students from Tennessee. Throughout my internship, I attended hearings on the economic impact of the Affordable Healthcare Act and shared my notes with the staffers. I also worked in the front of the office, where I answered constituent concerns regarding Corker's policy decisions and voting record, steering the conversation away from debate and giving diplomatic, accurate information. In addition, I guided historical constituent tours of the U.S. Capitol and supported the success of the office by running errands and helping with office maintenance. Show less

      Dec 2015 - May 2016

I assisted Dr. Gregg Ivers in his research on the impact of jazz music on the Civil Rights Movement, while also conducting my own research. I focused on Stax Records in Memphis, TN, where a groundbreaking, bi-racial collaborative work environment produced legendary soul music in an unlikely setting: the segregated South. I was able to interview Wayne Jackson and compile various oral history documents on the topic. I assisted with the planning and execution of alumni events in the DC area and around the globe. This included coordinating with caterers, venue research, and revenue filing for alumni events. I also assisted in maintaining active event listings on the alumni webpage and organizing and drafting related messaging for email event marketing. After taking a course on the Latino Community of Metro DC that involved a 25 hour volunteer component in the DC Latino nonprofit sector, I was asked to present on the strengths and challenges of community based learning. Specifically, I focused on how millennials can overcome their stereotypes and challenges through thoughtful involvement with community partnerships.
