Experience

Shimmy Marcus Film
Mar 2008 - Mar 2008Soul BoyThis may have been my first experience that truly attracted me to filmmaking. A chance to get behind the scenes of an independent feature. I personally found what was going on off-set more appealing than what I was doing in front of the camera as an extra.I was astonished by the amount of people rushing around on set. This made me realize that behind the enchantment is a world of demands and schedules, which spurred my passion for set-scenes and cameras.

Models North
Mar 2010 - Aug 2011Fashion ModelI discovered this simply out of chance when scouted in Manchester. It lead onto working on shoots for Billabong and Quicksilver, but also built up my self-confidence as I explored this industry driven by charisma. It also spurred my hobby for cameras and set-scenes, as I’m now a big film-making enthusiast.

Argos
Oct 2010 - Mar 2011Sales AssistantMy main roles within this position were till-operating, assisting customers and manually collecting orders in the stock rooms. I gained many transferable retail skills throughout.

Love The Dogs - Hall Green Greyhound Stadium
Nov 2010 - Mar 2011Waiter, Bar StaffI started off as a waiter until I was transferred to Bar Staff as I wanted to get a more inclusive experience while working there. I genuinely enjoyed my relationships with customers and making sure their service was just as I would expect to be treated.

Leeds TV
Mar 2011 - Mar 2011Independent Video ProjectI made some simple arrangements with a professional boxing promoter and trainer named Lee Murtargh about making a video diary for an event he was holding at the Batley Frontier Arena in Leeds. The event would have five licensed title fights for the WBF championship. I didn't want to miss this as boxing is already a hobby of mine. I decided to gear up by using my own video equipment, with an extra boom mic that I borrowed from the studio. When I arrived there I was given a press pass, and met Lee who allowed me access to all areas, including ringside and backstage. By the end of the day I came away with some very good interviews and captured good overall coverage for most the matches and the public response that day. Generally it was a successfully publicized project which was submitted to Leeds TV who welcomed my independent material, as they were keen on broadcasting local issues and events. Show less

Independent Business
Jun 2011 - Aug 2013Smoothie StandI used to run my own smoothie stand at various festivals and carnivals during the summer. This was probably my first entrepreneurial job that I managed to gain some financial success from.

Savile & Chrome
Jan 2012 - Feb 2012Office RunnerWhile working in the admin office at this media & broadcast production studio, I was given the responsibility of editing a video for a company called Mistura Latina, who promote Latin music styles through events, club nights and music production. I was to make a show-reel for their web page which would focus particularly on one of the talented dancers who was to soon appear in the Olympics. My second production role here was more hands-on and manual, as it was outside the admin office and inside the TV studio instead. Here I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes of a public service training video for a big brand mobile phone company. Here I was introduced to a group of CEOs who discussed their script between themselves while I set up the lighting, camera and boom mic in the appropriate positions for where-about in the studio they wanted to stand and talk. After this experience, when they were done recording what they came to do, I asked Isi for some feedback on my performance, to which he said fairly professional except for one thing: that I should never talk about faults or mistakes of a video-take in front of clients who the video is for. This could arouse suspicion that they are not in the hands of a confidently skilled crew, which is advice that has now stuck with me. Show less

La Cafetiere Mediterranean Cafe
Oct 2012 - Jun 2013Head FoHI handled both catering and customer service here by either working in the kitchen preparing food & drinks, or taking customers’ orders on the tables as a waiter. Both of which required fine presentation and a friendly demeanour.

Trinity Vision
Feb 2013 - Feb 2013One of the most memorable experiences of my Level 5 placement was working with Rob Greenland from Leeds Empties and Motasem Aliwaiwi, a director from Palestine TV. They needed Trinity Vision to make a short film about their independent charity which aims to renovate empty properties into houses for the homeless. This project appealed to me because I wanted to visit these derelict houses and interview people struggling with homelessness and were willing to share their stories. Two fellow placement students and I volunteered to participate in this short film by agreeing to meet up with Motasem a couple days later for pre-production, where we would arrange a shooting schedule. We all agreed that the structure of the video should outline a past, present and future layout, consisting of 'what Leeds Empties and Latch have done in the past, what they are currently doing, and what they aim to do.' We then gathered the details of relevant clients who we would need to provide interviews. The first issue we slightly struggled with was the language barrier between us and Motasem, which left us responsible for contacting companies such as Latch and Gipsil to arrange interview dates. This wasn't a problem as I’ve worked in admin in the past and have encountered this issue before. Plus it benefited us in terms of customer contacting for future reference, when recruiting volunteers and promoting awareness on a project. In our second meeting with Motasem, we made sure that the planning was heading in the right direction and that the call sheet was finished, so that all the interviews were organised properly. In terms of pointing out the required content for the story, I believe us students established and prepared the majority of it. Show less A team of us set out to Bradford City F.C to make a promotional video for the Positive Lifestyle organization, which was later put on their web page in order to exemplify their work and highlight the positive feedback and results from their sessions. Before we paid them a visit, we recorded and studied a genuine session, for preparation purposes. In industry terms, this is called doing a 'reccy'.We then brought the footage back to the office to review the routine as a whole. We kept an eye out for when certain activities would take place, and where the children would be moving so we could set up the cameras in advance. This also helped me plan the shot-list and other production requirements. When we arrived, we had a preconception and vision of where we were supposed to set up and capture the event. I directed the camera operators by reminding them of the positions, as well as a synopsis and summary of what should be shot i.e. plenty of happy faces and close-ups of the teacher presenting. We had to keep the outcome in mind and base everything on what we saw previously. One difficultly was remembering which children could and could not be filmed due to privacy issues. I found the preparation method that we used for this project very compelling, by filming an event then going away to watch it and make notes. This pre-coverage strategy was helpful, as it outlined what we need to capture just like a blueprint. I have used this method in current events, which are reoccuring and not live, as it gives us beneficial awareness and keeps us one step ahead. Show less Two fellow placement students and I made a video to advertise and highlight the services available at our university's Media Services Department and persuade people to take advantage of them. This informative video would show how they provide equipment, support and training to students, staff and external clients. As film students, our team already knew what was on offer, but we had to imagine from a person’s point of view if they were unaware of the campus' Media Services. So we asked ourselves 'what would we like to see in the video, and what we would ask if we wanted to know more?' Our plan of action was to initially collect some information by creating a research sheet and asking staff to fill it out. Once we covered a few queries that needed investigating, we decided what criteria and shots we were going to include in the video itself. We also considered the general style of the video, of whether it should be formal or more upbeat. We eventually ended up pitching a first draft to our mentors, and assessing what we needed to add or lose. Once we made our story board with photos we took around the facilities, we tried to link it with the dialogue and music, which took more attempts than we expected; especially since we had to direct the person’s voice to the right speed and tone to match the video’s mood.Generally, our priorities of this video were to portray the quick and simple process of renting equipment while simultaneously giving a tour around the facilities, which I think we achieved. By the time the edit was complete, we realized that we had covered every addition we aimed to include, image and sound wise. Show less

BBC
Feb 2013 - Feb 2013Broadcast AssistantFor employability & enterprise week, I headed over to the BBC Media-City UK Studios in Manchester for an open day. This was not only a privilege for me, but also a special occasion for them as it signified one year since people filmed themselves for the ‘Britain in a Day’ project which hundreds of students around the country including myself took part in. This open day was held in order to congratulate and thank us for helping make this successful TV documentary - by allowing us to meet some of the content makers across the BBC and let us question them about how they started their careers and what they do now within the BBC.I learnt about censorship & broadcasting in a meeting with three executive producers. The first session was led by a gentleman who was in charge of 'editorial policy' which looks after the content of what goes onto our TV screens, radios & online. I learnt about the legal and regulatory aspects of this role, the legal aspects dealt with defamation and contempt of court acts. However, I was more interested in the ethical issues which determine the BBC's values and how they conduct themselves in terms of audience expectation and what's acceptable. The next session was held by three BBC content makers who shared their stories about their journeys into the industry. For me this was the most valuable and useful session by far, as I gained lots of advice by finding out their routes into the business. Overall, this session taught me that you shouldn't run before you can walk, in other words you should use the skills you already have and apply for positions that genuinely suit you. In addition, you should build up your CV by working for indie production companies initially. But most importantly, there are lots of others also trying to get on the same ladder, so you need to stay committed, enthusiastic and keep on impressing. Show less
