    • HEART OF TEXAS URBAN GARDENING COALITION

      Nov 2011 - Dec 2012
      Development Coordinator

I was chiefly responsible for fundraising, financial accountability, strategic planning, capacity building, program development, and board development. The organization began as a loose group of volunteers who wanted to spread more community gardens and changed into a fully functioning 501(c)3 nonprofit with multiple, robust programs. I was lucky to have close friends who I could work with and rely on to carry out very challenging but rewarding work.I helped develop the organization's first comprehensive financial reporting and accounting system, as well as its first annual report. I helped diversify the organization's funding base with a blend of local foundation funding, individual donor support, membership dues, and earned revenue through vegetable sales at the local farmers market. I also helped fund staff positions through the organization rather than through only outside grant revenue, and helped secure media opportunities on our local NPR station, local television, and in the Waco Tribune Herald.I also worked with the board to help guide board structure, processes, terms, and identifying educational opportunities so that they better understood their role as board members. In addition, I worked to expand and refine programming, including our services to our membership, school gardens, and especially our Urban Training Farm project. Specifically, this included leading the content production of investor communications, WCCN's newsletter, WCCN's annual report, e-mail marketing, Google AdWords campaigns and social media. I also led the development of the Food Finance Institute's Salesforce CRM instance, including custom process development and process automation integrations between Salesforce and the Edible-Alpha® platform. Show less I worked for the Food Finance Institute (FFI), which leverages and supports a collaborative network of professionals with training, tools and resources so they can help build and fund profitable businesses in the food, beverage and value-added agriculture sector. I helped coordinate and organized FFI's consulting and training activities, produced its podcast and newsletter, increased its online presence through great content marketing, and also consulted with food and agriculture businesses in conjunction with FFI Director Tera Johnson.
