  Being a guide leader has brought many challenging and rewarding experiences including many camps involving compass work, craft lessons and wide games. Guide work is all voluntary making it possible to gain skills not available in the average work place such as teamwork, resourcefullness, being calm and collected under pressure, ambition, leadership and hard workiing. A guide leader must be responsible, trusthworthy and capable of being a positive role model at all times. On many occasions I was left with the duty of care of up to thirty girls ranging in age from four to twelve. With the variety of girls and backgrounds present in our unit patience and persistance is required, despite difficulty. I have had experience in dealing with girls with disabilities and emotionally troubled. Dealing with a child with a disability is a demanding task as well as being both physically and emotionally exhausting. Helping a child deal with abuse or grief is equally as demanding and both have been required in my time with the guides. Show less

  I have been responsible for the organisation and satisfactory delivery of up to five parties a week. Every party at Hungry Jacks is different. On arrival I set up which involves often single handedly preparing for an average of twenty children of varying ages. The set up entails making a pass the parcel, organising the party favours, getting costumes in order and cleaning the party room. My main duty in parties is to supervise and entertain the children, but I am also required to liase with parents, prepare the birthday cake and on occasion prepare all the meals as well. Most parents are happy for the party to run as planned however there may be requests for a change, should this happen I am required to work around the guests plans while still ensuring the party runs smoothly. Often it is expected that I immediately work around what the parents need, without warning. Hungry Jacks has a playground which is helpful in parties. During training I was informed that my duty was to supervise only. I soon found that this was not enough to keep the kids happy. I adapted what I was taught to work with the situation, incorporating playing hide and seek and numerous other games with the children, not just watching. The hands on approach often impresses the parents involved.; The main aspect of this job is waitressing and kitchen hand. Learnt money handling and basic kitchen hygiene.; Working here took imagination and confidence. Every costume was individual and mostly created on the spot. People from all walks of life visited the costume hire which taught me how to deal with many different types of people, both young and old.Fusspots Kitchen hand duties and customer service; Both in store and at outdoor markets.   Working at PCYC is brilliant fun and a brilliant learning opportunity. My duties are, supervising the children, entertaining them, mentoring, supporting, counselling and any other tasks they present. I am also a AASC coach and take on sporting session each week. Every day is different and every child is unique meaning I have to learn to appropriately deal with 40+ children as each child responds differently to different approaches to learning or discipline. The staff are all very supportive of each other and a family atmosphere is present making team work easy and the workplace a joyful experience. Show less
