  In my position as a Student Assistant for the Geology Branch of the Division of Safety of Dams, I am gaining a better understanding of the regulatory and review process. Working for a department that is responsible for preventing disasters related to geologic hazards, one cannot ignore the importance of the accuracy and succinctness needed when composing reports. The bulk of my current duties involve active support and preliminary investigation for Senior Engineering Geologists. I create figures using ArcGIS, research literature, compose memorandum, perform seismic hazard analysis, investigate case histories, provide user support for ArcGIS, and create presentations of my findings. The work has made me resourceful, organized, and versatile. I know these traits will be just as essential to being an outstanding Professional Geologist. Specific examples of my experience: Development of methods to calculate the expected ground motions at a site based on the attenuation formulas developed by the NGA researchers in order to classify dam site safety. Creation of maps, figures, cross-sections and databases that describe the seismic hazard and geologic site conditions of dams under review by the Division's dam reanalysis program.Composition of memorandum of seismic hazard review. Work with Engineering Geologists in recommendations of prospective drill sites for further subsurface exploration. Assisted with field inspections of dams. Performed preliminary site investigations using remote sensing data and GIS. Modernized the office library and digital geologic data. Show less
