International Field Course in Tropical Ecology and Rapid Biodiversity Assessment

International student field course in tropical ecology and rapid biodiversity assessment dealing with recolonization dynamics on the Krakatoa Archipelago by the surrounding National Parks (Sumatra and Java). This internship was a collaboration between the Bogor Agricultural University (Indonesia) in cooperation with the University of Vienna (Austria).

      Dahab Reef Monitoring Project

This reef monitoring programme is based on an extension of the standard Reef Check procedure comprising the assessment of invertebrate -, fish. and substrate- assemblages at selected sites in the Red Sea. The aim of the extended Protocol is to provide more well-defined data describing the status of coral reef health with respect to anthropogenic and natural impact.

      MSc Student Research Assistant

MSc Thesis Title: “The Evolutionary History of the Fucus spiralis / Fucus guiryi Complex”The research that was performed within the frame of my master’s thesis addresses a large-scale biogeographical question, the distribution and evolutionary history of a marine species complex with a vast distribution in the northern hemisphere This complex includes two intertidal brown macroalgae, Fucus spiralis and Fucus guiryi, whose boundaries, degree of isolation and ranges are imperfectly known. This study tries to broaden the knowledge on the geographical distribution of this species complex and aims to identify determining factors, especially in the face of global warming and rising sea surface temperature. A genetic diversity and differentiation analysis was applied, using microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA for assessing the influence of historical and ongoing processes in explaining species distributions, range limits and gene-pools, which are driven by great climate events such as the last glacial maximum as well as historical and ongoing hybridization. In addition to the genetic methods, species distribution models were developed to investigate niche differences and assess potential near-future range shifts under two contrasting climate change scenarios. Laboratory Technician

The Plant Physiology Research Team of the University of Leipzig explores available genome sequences from algae to find hints for yet unknown metabolites, and to identify biosynthetic pathways to known compounds. In the laboratory, we are using the model organism Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and combine genetic strategies with physiological and chemical-analytical methods to elucidate the benefit of specific compounds and proteins for the algal cell. This research provides ecological insights into algal lifestyle and improves our understanding of how algae interact with their environment and other organisms. In addition, the investigation of algal metabolism may lead to the discovery of biotechnologically or pharmaceutically useful compounds and processes. Show less
