      Dinghy Instructor

As a dinghy instructor I cater for all ages and abilities using my planning, time management and interpersonal skills to ensure a safe and valuable lesson is delivered. This role requires excellent communication skills in order to guide the pupil whilst remaining patient and diplomatic. Lessons are pre-planned to ensure suitable equipment is used but adaptability is key due to the varying weather conditions and the frequency of sandstorms. This job has allowed me to become confident in a leadership role and be comfortable being responsible for individuals in my care and valuable equipment. Show less

      Student Ambassador

Through my role as a student ambassador I actively promote the University of Southampton and aim to encourage students to pursue higher education. This requires me to understand the opportunities available to students both at Southampton and in other areas. I have worked at higher education days at local colleges as well as working at Engineering days such as the Dragonfly day on campus. The dragonfly day is aimed at year nine female students to help encourage them to consider undertaking engineering in the future and taking maths and sciences at GCSEs and A-Levels. This opportunity has allowed me to engage with girls and help them make a well informed career choice. I have been able to work on my time-management skills as increase my ability to work in both a team and leadership role. Show less

My skill was cooking wherein I taught year ten students how to cook in an hourly session, which also helped me gain a better understanding of how to cook.My service involved assisting the teacher at school with training the bronze DofE students who were to undertake in their first expedition. I additionally volunteered at a special needs school for a term assisting in the classroom once a week with a group of 12-14 year olds with varying disabilities. This involved helping in PE with motivating the children or problem solving when doing maths lessons. This helped my verbal and non-verbal communication skills. The physical activity undertaken was sailing in both keelboats and dinghies. I sailed a Laser for two seasons competing in regular club events. On alternating weekends, I was a crew member on a beneteau 34.7 keel, which competed in the second division of club's keelboat cup. The expedition was completed in the Al Hajar Mountains in late February 2010, which required me to be prepared for a variety of varying conditions including dune. This also required excellent teamwork and communication skills as the team of six had to stay motivated throughout the expedition. The residential project involved participating in an Insight summer school in June 2009, in order to better understand the opportunities available in engineering. This week helped me make my decision to study engineering whilst at university. Show less
