  • About me

Postdoctoral Researcher at University of California, Santa Cruz

  • Education

    • State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry

      2010 - 2018
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Wildlife, Fish and Wildlands Science and Management

My graduate work focused on the catfish of the family Pimelodidae, particularly the giants of the genus Brachyplatystoma, which undertake spawning migrations of thousands of kilometers in the Amazon River. I also studied phylogenetic patterns of migration within the family using cutting-edge techniques including laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and x-ray flourescence.

    • Cornell University

      2005 - 2009
Bachelor of Science (BS) Geological and Earth Sciences/Geosciences 3.67 GPA

      Biogeochemistry and ecology

    • Syracuse University - Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs

      2012 - 2013
      Master's degree Public Administration

      Economics and statistics.

  • Experience

    • Cornell University

      Aug 2006 - May 2007
      Laboratory Assistant

I worked for the McCune Evolutionary Biology Laboratory group as a student laboratory assistant. I managed a large aquarium system used for research purposes. Tasks included maintaining appropriate water chemistry, inducing spawning events to collect embryos used in development studies, monitoring and maintaining fish nutrition, euthanizing of fish when necessary and general laboratory maintenance.

    • Cornell University

      Aug 2007 - Aug 2010

I worked as a technician in the Hairston Limnology Laboratory at Cornell University. I managed long-term Daphnia cultures used in growth experiments; collected data from freshwater microcosms ("chemostats") used in population dynamics studies; collected data with extensive microscopy (compound and dissecting microscopes); aided in experimental design for microcosm systems; trained and supervised undergraduate students working in the lab; and performed general lab maintenance (e.g. mixing of stock chemicals). Collection's Assistant

Worked within a team to reorganize the PRI’s extensive fossil collection. Duties included careful transfer of specimens to temporary storage, operating trucks to move specimens from one building to another, and general organizational operations.

      Aug 2010 - May 2014
      Graduate Assistant

I taught several courses: Introductory Biology Lab (Fall 2010 and Fall 2011), Ichthyology (Spring 2012, Spring 2013, Spring 2014), Fisheries Science and Management (Fall 2012, Fall 2013), Evolutionary Biology (Spring 2011), and Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (Spring 2011). Duties included teaching sections, grading assignments and tests, designing test questions, organizing laboratory exercises, and leading field exercises.

    • Self-employed

      Jan 2014 - Jun 2021
      Independent Writing And Editing Professional

Freelance academic editor; provide subject-specific editing for non-native English-speaking academic writers. Focused on the Life and Earth Sciences, but versatile and experienced with a wide range of other disciplines, including Public Policy, Engineering, Earth Sciences, and the Medical Sciences.

    • SUNY-ESF

      Aug 2014 - Dec 2018
      PhD Candidate

I used indirect analytical methods to deduce migratory behaviors to provide rapid insights on ecologically and economically important fish species in the Amazon. This work provided much of the groundwork for a now-growing field of research.

    • Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

      Mar 2020 - Apr 2020
      Data Science Consultant

As a fellow in the 5-week Science to Data Science (S2DS) program, consulted EPRI on non-destructive testing of heat exchangers, which are critical components used in a wide variety of industrial settings. Our four-person team fit models to predict the extent of damage in heat exchangers using eddy-current readings. The error of 7% for these models was a significant improvement on current industry benchmark of 15%.
