I serve as the primary instructor for First Year Experience courses, specifically designed for first-year first-generation college students. These weekly, one-credit transition to college courses aim to foster a sense of belonging, college retention, and persistence among students. Additionally, I have mentored two Doctoral Instructional Assistants in the Development and Curriculum program, guiding them in developing pedagogical approaches, teaching philosophies, classroom management techniques, and creating lesson plans and materials. I prepare and facilitate well-organized presentations and class discussions on various topics related to the challenges and successes of first-generation students. Moreover, I regularly meet with an assigned peer mentor to coordinate and plan course components. Show less I oversee two programs – Peer Mentoring and First-Generation Initiatives. I have led extensive efforts to support incoming first-year first-time college students’ transition to college, as well as efforts to retain them beyond their first year. I secured recertification from the College Reading & Learning Association for the Peer Mentoring program certified through 2028. I have led efforts to advance first-gen student success by creating an inclusive and supportive culture that celebrates and empowers first-gen students. For both programs, I manage budgets, hire and supervise full-time employees, graduate assistants, and student workers, organize events such as peer mentoring banquets and National First-Generation Celebration Week, and forge partnerships with community-based organizations such as Breakthrough Central Texas, College Possible, and the Hector and Gloria Lopez Foundation. I analyze data on the impact of mentorship and first-generation initiatives and lead successful fundraising endeavors, including securing sponsorships for events like the inaugural First-Gen Graduation Ceremony. Leading TXST to receive the distinction of a First Scholar institution by NASPA First-Gen Center underscores our dedication to first-generation student success. Show less
