Associate Professor Daniel McCluskey is Deputy Dean of School for the School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. He is responsible for the strategic leadership across the STEM portfolio spanning education, research and enterprise. Daniel is an Chartered Engineer and Associate Professor of Research within the School and a key point of contact with a track record in successful, multidisciplinary collaborations between Industry, Academics and Research staff across the Engineering spectrum, leading the delivery of projects with consistent success. His personal research area focussed on Biodetection Technology and system design for early warning of airborne biological threats. Show less Dr Daniel McCluskey is Head of Department of Engineering in the the University of Hertfordshire School of Engineering & Computer Science. He is responsible for the strategic leadership in engineering education, research and enterprise across the Engineering department. Daniel is an Associate Professor within the School and a key point of contact with a track record in successful, multidisciplinary collaborations between Industry, Academics and Research staff across the Engineering spectrum, leading the delivery of projects with consistent success. Show less Dr Daniel McCluskey is Director of the Centre for Research in Biodetection Technologies (CRBT) and Chief Engineer of Applied R&D within the University of Hertfordshire’s Microfluidics & Microengineering Research Group (MMRG). He graduated with a BEng Aerospace Engineering in 2003 from the University of Hertfordshire before gaining his PhD from Coventry University in 2009, concerned with Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis of hydrocyclonic separation of invasive species transported via shipboard ballast water. Since joining the MMRG his work has focused on the rapid development of turn-key, fluid dynamics based, integrated biodetection systems. Working closely with the Scientific and Experimental R&D team within the MMRG, the Applied R&D team typically aim to raise the Technology Readiness Level of biodetection research concepts and prototypes from TRL1/2/3 to TRL5/6. Clients include the UK MoD and the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Porton Down), with collaborators on Industry and Research Council funded projects including Optisense Ltd., Fera Science Ltd and Bayer Cropscience. Current biodetection R&D projects have a focus on the development of integrated systems incorporating autonomous airborne pathogen collect/detect systems, sample processing and handling, real-time analysis using DNA amplification and remote reporting.Applications include:Biowarfare, crop protection & food security, woodland & plant biosecurity and aquaculture. Show less Providing technical and managerial leadership to the Microfluidics & Microengineering Research Group, a multidisciplinary research group focussed on everything from lab-on-a-chip devices through to complex, integrated applied R&D and hardware development projects.Acting as Research lead and a design authority on system architecture and build of prototype systems integrating diverse technologies. Working closely with my research colleagues to develop and evaluate research outputs including prototype biodetection systems.Close liaison with technical and project management staff in client organisations, including Academic collaborators, UK MoD, Defence Science & Technology Laboratories (Porton Down), Fera Science Ltd, Bayer Cropscience and funding bodies including Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), InnovateUK and the European Research Council.
