      Research Intern

During my internship at the American Museum of Natural History, I conducted research with the Curator Emeritus of South American Ethnology. Our project focused on the history of the sociopolitical structure of a particular region of the Brazilian Amazon. The main component of my research was conducting a literary review of Michael J. Heckenberger’s book The Ecology of Power. Additionally, I formulated a “Chiefdom Chart” that outlines the hypothesized indications and characteristics of a chiefdom. The chart can be used by social scientists as part of their assessment of the presence of chiefdoms in any region. To synthesize the findings of my research, I composed a paper evaluating the socio-political organization of the early inhabitants of the Upper Xingú, which, along with the “Chiefdom Chart,” I ultimately presented at the International Conference of Americanists in Vienna in July 2012.
