    • University of East Anglia

      Oct 2012 - Jun 2016

As an associate tutor I prepared and led first year undergraduate seminars, marked formative and summative coursework, and conducted tutorials with students when required. It required a great deal of organisation and the ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously, often calling upon a need to prioritise tasks to maximise efficiency. I taught an introductory module on early modern history, a case study course titled Witchcraft, Magic and Belief in Early Modern Europe, and a module with a wide chronological scope, designed to develop study skills and encourage engagement with historiography, History, Controversy, and Debate. As an associate tutor I also taught on three International Summer School courses, titled Plague and Disease in the Medieval City. Teaching relies upon excellent interpersonal skills, being able to interact with students, other academic staff, and administrative staff. Being able to conduct oneself in a professional yet friendly manner at all times is essential to the role. Further to this, the need to respect student confidentiality regarding personal or academic issues is vital, relying upon an understanding of high standards of pastoral care.I am a fast learner, a skill developed in this position as I have often been called upon to prepare classes on subjects that I have little knowledge of. It is vital to be able to acquire new knowledge and skills quickly, and to maintain these going forward. Show less In this role I acted as a liaison between postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Careers Centre at the University of East Anglia. We worked hard to encourage these students to engage earlier and more actively with their dedicated careers and employability service. It required me to be confident and outgoing, contacting students in person or by email, in order to facilitate new relationships. I have worked with Careers Ambassadors from other faculties at the university in order to plan and run three social events that are aimed at the students who as yet are not connecting with their careers service. Each event has been planned extensively, refreshments arranged, locations booked, and run smoothly. All three were great successes, and I constructed employment questionnaires for two of the events in order to garner further information from those in attendance, enquiring about what they would like to see from their careers service. This was a new role when I started, and we saw success in engaging students from the Arts and Humanities. It called upon a strong social media presence, managing a professional Twitter and Facebook presence. Show less

      Brilliant Club Tutor

The Brilliant Club aims to widen access to highly selective universities for students from typically low-participation areas. As a tutor on the organisation's Scholar's Programme, I delivered a programme of university-style tutorials to small groups of high performing pupils aged 9-11. I developed my own teaching aids to guide the students in their study, and in their final assignment. This position involved communicating and engaging with local communities, raising aspiration for further and higher education. Show less
