      Senior Vice President KDC

As Senior Vice President KDC at Gold Fields Ltd., I was responsible for the safe delivery on the operational plan for Kloof and Driefontein Mines combined. The combined mine had eleven (11) operational production shafts and fifteen operations if pumping infrastructure were to be included. The workforce came to approximately 28 000 mine employees and 5 000 contractors. Depth of mining ranged from shallow to ultra-deep underground mining in a very seismic environment.Main responsibilities included establishing and delivering safely on a annual production plan. Strategic plans were formulated annually to support the bigger picture strategy of Gold Fields as a whole. Significant safety and production achievements and delivery on mining plans were achieved annually. Responsibility also included the delivery on cost targets as well as creating value in terms of delivering profits for Gold Fields Ltd. monthly and annually as per the business plan.Managing KDC was at a time when notable industrial action was threatening the viability of mining across South Africa. KDC was targeted in the West Rand, and although affected severely during this period, managed to recover in a very reasonable period when the industrial action was settled down. Show less

      Feb 2013 - Jul 2014
      Vice President

As Vice President at Sibanye, I assumed responsibility for Driefontein Gold Mine Limited. Driefontein has six operating shaft systems and a total of eight if pumping shafts are included. Workforce at the time was approximately 14 500 mine employees and another 1 500 - 2 000 contractors. Mining depth ranges from shallow (1 000m) to ultra-deep level (3 800m). Most of the deeper operations were serviced by either sub-shaft or tertiary shaft systems. The underground operations were divided into four operating units, each with an autonomous mining team reporting into the office of Vice President.Prior to being responsible for Driefontein Mine, I assumed responsibility for both Driefontein and Kloof Mines. The combined mine known as KDC (Kloof/Driefontein Complex) was divided and operated as eight (8) mining units, each with autonomous mining teams. The number of operating shafts was five at Kloof Gold Mining Company with a total of six shaft systems inclusive of pumping facilities and then six operating shafts at Driefontein and eight (8) shafts systems including pumping infrastructure. Combined operation had fifteen shaft operations, five processing plants and more than a million tons of surface material being handled per production month.During my employment as Vice President on these operations, significant safety as well as production milestones were achieved. Numerous million, two million, and three million fatality free shifts were achieved with the highlight of Kloof Mine achieving four million fatality free shift soon after I took on different responsibilities within Sibanye Gold.Main responsibilities apart from delivering on a safe production plan, was the directing the mines under my control in delivering value to the larger Sibanye Group from a financial point of view. Not only was the focus on establishing a workable production plan, but also introducing significant initiatives to reduce and contain cost to acceptable levels. Show less
