      As a Student Conservation Association Intern I worked as a Contact Ranger for Santa Fe National Forest - Pecos District. My duties included: making contact with forest visitors to spread the Respect the Rio message of forest preservation and Leave No Trace ethics and to obtain information about visitors so that the Forest Service can better serve the public (4,282 contacts total); creating and presenting educational programs for visitors of all ages (11 programs, 13 presentations); planning and implementing wildlife surveys and restoration projects (1 survey, 3 projects); completing trail reviews (11) to create a comprehensive Trail Guide for visitors and USFS employees including details of over 50 trails, information about local invasive species, and a Children's Trail Activity Book; and representing the Forest Service at local schools (3), public festivals and fairs (2), business events (REI of Santa Fe), farmer's markets (1), and clean-ups sponsored by the Upper Pecos Watershed Association (1).       Daily tasks range from assisting with routine water quality sample collection on the Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix rivers, preparing water and chlorophyll samples for lab processing, culturing Daphnia populations for toxicity testing, collecting sediment samples from rivers for biomonitoring, data organization and lake “grade” computation, routine maintenance of stream and river auto monitor stations and collection of composite water samples after storm events, obtaining stream velocity and depth measurements for rating curves, groundwater well monitoring, and using secci disks and tubes, a YSI probe, velocity meters, and light meters to monitor turbidity, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen content, temperature, flow rate, and algal productivity in rivers.The internship also includes the opportunity to perform a research project. For my project, trace metals data of Mississippi River sediments and Metropolitan Waste Water Treatment Plant effluent from the past 30 years are being statistically analyzed and compared to mayfly emergence data. The goal is to determine if trace metals in the water and sediment have an impact on the health of the mayfly population, an important indicator for the wellbeing of the Mississippi River. Show less

I also assisted students during lecture and lab periods to help teach the three goals of the course: that students have the ability to make small-scale physical observations, then make interpretations of depositional processes, and finally make large-scale interpretations of depositional environments. Created a detailed PowerPoint providing step-by-step instructions on all closing procedures and how to find and calculate the data needed for closing reports.
