    • Pathfinder

      Jul 2018 - Aug 2018
      Teaching Fellow

Pathfinder is a non-profit organization that teaches academic subjects to 5th-8th grade students from the public schools of new haven. Pathfinder is year round, and I only worked during their 6 week summer program. I was employed as a teaching fellow where I worked varying hours from 8-14 hour works days. I taught about 40 6th grade students math and computer science. Pathfinder showed me a new side, the administrative side, to teaching that I had never seen before. The stresses of teachers now became my concerns. For example, the battles against the copier or when technology stops working when you need to use it. While the lessons about the teaching world were valuable, I think the most beneficial experience I gained from this job was how interacting with the kids taught me so much about myself. I never considered myself a patient person, but when I was working I had to sit through hours of kids begging for my attention constantly, and it didn't bother me. The desire of my students to learn, inspired me instead of bothering me, and their energy refueled my energy instead of draining it. The summer of 2018 is one of my favorites, because of pathfinder. I loved the kids, the coworkers, and the experience. Show less

      Research Assistant

I am working with Professor Shayla Nunnally at the University of Connecticut as a research assistant. We are researching the journey of African American education in Virginia during the reconstruction era. Our research concerns how African Americans went from being enslaved and considered incapable of learning to later being educated in Virginia public schools.

    • Tufts Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group’s Redistricting Lab

      Jun 2020 - Jun 2021
      Geodata Bootcamp

Tufts Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group’s Redistricting Lab held a geodata bootcamp in order to introduce students to redistricting. I trained to digitize maps, clean census and election data, join shapefiles and tables using the MAUP package. I used GIS software (QGIS), redistricting techniques, geopandas, census data, and shapefiles to create digitized maps linked to precinct and election data for North Dakota precincts. After the geodata bootcamp ended, I later worked for the same organization as a DistrictR teacher for 4 months. I hosted workshops along with my coworkers to educate different organizations in the history of redistricting, how to conduct redistricting in general, and how to use the DistrictR software to create district maps.
