  Material Characterization & Extraction of Precision metal

  The amount of titanium present in ilmenite ore is determined by collecting various types of beach sand around Kerala, such as Kovalam and Shangumugham, as they contain ilmenite. Ilmenite, with the chemical formula FeTiO3, is the primary source of titanium dioxide, crucial in various industries. Extracting titanium from ilmenite involves a complex process. First, the sand undergoes X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis to confirm the presence of elements. Then, it is oxidized in a tubular furnace to convert ilmenite into titanium oxide, facilitating extraction. Next, the oxidized ore undergoes a rusting process where it is separated into iron oxide (Fe2O3) and titanium oxide (TiO2) using special equipment like mechanical stirring, concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl), distilled water, and a CO2 atmosphere. During this process, the pH value is monitored every 2 minutes to ensure optimal conditions. The iron manganese (FeMn) floats, while titanium oxide settles at the bottom. The ore is then collected and analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to determine the titanium content accurately. Show less
