      Summer Research Intern

I spent two months as a research intern at Stanford Medicine in the Department of Plastic Surgery and Regenerative Medicine under Dr. Jill Helms. I learned many laboratory skills: taking care of the mice, genotyping the mice, pariffinizing mice tissue, sectioning the tissue, staining the tissue, looking at the tissue under a microscope, capturing magnified images, quantifying those images, and performing statistical analysis. After learning all of these skills, I was assigned to a specific project. My project was looking at bone development and how that is controlled by the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. To do this, we examined the skulls of mice who had alterations in the genes known to control bone growth. We looked at the dimensions of the skull, the number of osteocytes (bone cells), the area of canaliculi (passageways in bone), and the expression of various proteins in these mice compared to control groups. To summarize the results: when the genes of interest don't work properly, it will lead to excess bone formation and impaired bone quality. This research could have clinical applications for osteoporosis treatment. My laboratory skills greatly improved, and I learned a lot about the day-to-day at a laboratory. Show less

I helped students improve their spoken English through scheduled Zoom meetings. We practiced grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and common phrases through conversation and other activities. I was responsible for scheduling my Zoom hours, communicating with students, and reporting to my supervisor. In January 2022, I was promoted to Lead Spoken English Tutor which gave me the responsibility of training new tutors, giving them advice, and answering their questions. I prepared for cooking classes, assisted students during class, and cleaned afterwards. The classes were designed to teach undergraduate and medical students nutrition basics and cooking skills. I instructed students to improve their cooking skills and ensure food safety. I was also partially responsible for grading assignments. Additionally, I worked on a project to improve the digital accessibility of the online pages for these courses.
