  In my PHD thesis entitled "Impacts of river habitat quality on the conservation of endangered target species", I am investigating aquatic habitat quality and its impacts on freshwater species (with a focus on bivalves and fishes). Main objective of this thesis is the analysis of habitat quality dynamics and its scale dependent effects on aquatic biota and conservation efforts. The methods ranged from classical ecological habitat analyses to bioindication and stable isotope analysis. Briefly, the case studies presented in this thesis revealed the strong impact of increased fine sediment deposition on riverbed conditions and on aquatic organisms, which induce scale-specific, strongly variable effects. As a consequence, target-specific restoration concepts are necessary to make conservation efforts successful. For that purpose, conservation concepts need to consider spatio-temporal, life-stage specific and evolutionary aspects. Show less

  The overall objective of this work is to design sustainable conservation strategies for mussels with a special focus on two highly endangered bivalve species: Margaritifera margaritifera, the European freshwater pearl mussel and Unio crassus, the European thick shelled river mussel. The concept integrates three main components, namely scientific research, conservation action and outreach work. The conservation management approach of this project integrates joint efforts of university and government organizations, most notably the Bavarian Environmental Protection Agency (“LfU Bayern”), and has a geographical focus on the state of Bavaria, Germany. Comprehensive data collection, ongoing surveys and field mapping provide basic knowledge on population and and habitat status and help to define deficits. After the completion of data collection in several catchments, the initiation and implementation of individual, catchment specific restoration programs has started. These programs include immediate rescue actions (e.g. host fish infections and mussel rearing) and long-term habitat restoration measures, monitoring and assessment of restoration success.The Mussel Coordination Office furthermore functions as a bridge between science and applied conservation. Relevant issues from conservation projects (e.g. host fish spectrum of U. Crassus) trigger applied research projects with immediate benefit for conservation practice. The transfer of results back into applied conservation is realized via publications, congresses, workshops and direct involvement into projects. Show less

  The project ArKoNaVera aims at saving populations of highly endangered freshwater mussels in Central Europe. In a joint project, eight partners from research and nature conservation including the Landschaftspflegeverband Passau e.V. develop the concept of a "semi-natural habitat connectivity" by implementing a mix of captive breeding, habitat restoration and public relations measures.
