During this period, Sergeant DeFreitas technical expertise and experience enabled the command's ability to utilize the defense switching network in all deployed environments, providing the commanders and staff the ability to communicate via secure and non-secure telephone to both external and internal elements. Understanding the need to have a resident expert on the RedCom commercial switch, he taught himself the technical switch operation. His ability to quickly install and manage a telephone architecture supporting over a 100 users ensured that the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit posses reliable telephone connectivity throughout every major exercise. His dedication and technical aptitude were instrumental in the effective command and control during landing force fifth fleet 2007 deployment. Sergeant DeFreitas exceptional professionalism, perseverance, and loyal devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and were keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
