      Research Intern

      I spent the majority of four summers in Dr. Defu Zeng's laboratory in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at the Beckman Research Institute. Under the guidance of graduate researchers, I conducted research on chronic graft-vs-host disease as well as diabetes using murine models. My efforts in the projects resulted in co-authorship on two papers published in the Journal of Immunology and one poster presentation at the City of Hope Summer Student Academy Poster Session.

      Through this preceptorship summer program headed by Dr. William Caton, I shadowed physicians in various specialties to learn about the practice of medicine in a hospital setting. The departments I had the opportunity to shadow in included neurosurgery, general surgery, pathology, plastic surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neuroradiology, and the intensive care unit. The time spent shadowing amounted to 300+ hours.
