  I spent the majority of four summers in Dr. Defu Zeng's laboratory in the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at the Beckman Research Institute. Under the guidance of graduate researchers, I conducted research on chronic graft-vs-host disease as well as diabetes using murine models. My efforts in the projects resulted in co-authorship on two papers published in the Journal of Immunology and one poster presentation at the City of Hope Summer Student Academy Poster Session.

  Student Preceptor

  Through this preceptorship summer program headed by Dr. William Caton, I shadowed physicians in various specialties to learn about the practice of medicine in a hospital setting. The departments I had the opportunity to shadow in included neurosurgery, general surgery, pathology, plastic surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neuroradiology, and the intensive care unit. The time spent shadowing amounted to 300+ hours.

  I performed my master's thesis within the In Vivo Biology and Safety department on a project titled "Impaired epidermal barrier function in MC903- and oxazolone-induced atopic dermatitis-like BALB/c mouse models". Upon completion and defense of my project, I received a grade of 12 (out of 12). My responsibilities included: - Planning and executing experiments for the development of induced skin inflammation in vivo models to study barrier function of the skin in disease expression- Analyzing relevant biomarkers and histological endpoints to interpret experimental data (techniques include MSD, ELISA, IHC staining methods)- Presenting at meetings and seminars to communicate data and discuss relevance of project to LEO Pharma pipeline Show less
