  Through our company, Austen Creative, my brilliant and talented wife, Ashley Hinson, and I teach theatre and acting classes to grades 1st through 12th. To explain the philosophy behind the work we do with our students, I borrow the words of one of my teachers, Ron Anderson. His goal was stated simply in his motto for teaching theatre to young people, "Teaching life skills through stage skills". It is an elegant idea. Better yet, it works! Collaboration, discipline, leadership, problem solving, out of the box thinking, listening skills, speaking skills, discovering your individual voice, harmonizing as part of a team, self-respect, respect for others, boundaries, etc. - These are some of the skills available to a student with just an inkling of willingness to engage, invite, and enjoy the experience of our theatre classes. We can teach the mindset of process over production to anyone that will show up and take a chance on consistency, their classmates, and themselves. Entertainment, acting, or theatre may not be the profession that you imagine for your children. Great! We need more doctors, lawyers, and politicians who have the skills we teach. Sure, we can teach them to be good actors. But what we aim to do is teach them how to be good humans. Show less
