During this period, the opportunities which infants are exposed depend directly on what the adult offers. However, caregivers need to consider that the infants are capable of actively learning through their exploratory actions to offer them these opportunities. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate whether maternal or infant characteristics could predict maternal belief that infants use their hands actively during the first 4 months after birth. The study included 72 mothers who answered a questionnaire about sociodemographic, gestational, infants’ characteristics at birth, and hands active behaviour. Binary logistic regression was performed. The results show that the older the infants are, and the greater the number of youth and children in the household, the greater the chance that the mother thinks that the infant is active. These results indicate that the more experience mothers have on infants and children’s care, the more they tend to perceive infants as active. Such results are an important indicative that mothers and infants can benefit from information on the development of active behaviour during the firsts months after birth. Show less
