      Activities and Societies: Sigma Alpha Iota, Marching Band/Flag Corps, Musical Theater, Newspaper I was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota sorority, of Scroll and Honor Society, marched in the band, sang in Modern Choir, and performed in several musical theater productions. (I had lead roles in Music Man, H.M.S. Pinafore, and Trouble in Tahiti)

      I worked with the Oklahoma A+ Schools program as a Fellow, mentor, and workshop coordinator/presenter for eleven years. It is a great program, focused on integrating active art (music, dance, theater, visual arts) with the study of core curriculum (math, science, language arts, and social studies). Through A+ Schools, I offered workshops with teachers, administrators, and students in K-12 schools. The program made a huge impact in the way I taught music in my classrooms.

      I have worked consecutive summers in various research projects, funded through multiple grant programs, including the Yale University program for Music in Schools, the Fund for Teachers, Keeping Score, the US-Japan/UNESCO/Fulbright Foundation program "Educating for Sustainable Development", the Freeman Foundation (in China), the US Department of Defense's STARTALK Critical Language Research Program, and the Star Spangled Music Foundation. My most recent research project was a study into the retention of the Ghana culture and language, conducted in Charleston, SC, (Summer, 2017). Show less

      I acted as state-wide liaison between the University of Oklahoma, Confucius Institute, Hanban, the DOD's StarTalk critical language program, the National Consortium for Teaching Asia, the American Council for Teaching Foreign Language (ACTFL), and various school districts throughout the state on behalf of global awareness focused on Asian cultures and Chinese language and cultural exchanges.

      I worked as the University of Oklahoma's Director of the US Department of Defense's STARTALK Critical Language Program (Chinese) for four consecutive summers. Additionally, I worked as Director of an afterschool program (with STARTALK funding) for two school years in both Tulsa and Norman, OK. STARTALK is a great program, with amazing training in the teaching of critical languages. I was also privileged to act as a presenter for STARTALK (with Susie Tattershall, lead Chinese instructor at OU STARTALK and Ghaffar Pourazar, Chinese opera performer). Show less
