I also partook in numerous laboratory sessions as part of these modules where I became involved in the practical side of chemistry. As part of my final year I conducted research under the guidance of Dr. Susan Quinn which I wrote my bachelors thesis on, "Synthesis, Functionalization and Characterization of Carbon Dots".In 2016 I was elected vice president of UCD Chemistry Society where I was involved in the organization of a variety of activities for the society, including charity events, career work-shops, and invited talks from distinguished chemists. Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
      Research Intern

In the summer of 2014, I undertook an 8 week internship in the laboratory of Dr Paul Evans. During this period I performed small molecule synthesis, developing synthetic organic chemistry skills, purification techniques, and analytical tecniques via the use of various spectroscopic means. This research provided me with substantial lab experience, as well as allowing me to hone my skills in reporting and analyzing data.

      PhD Student

Research Supervisor: Professor Declan GilheanyAsymmetric synthesis remains one of the most important areas of organic chemistry. My research involves an asymmetric variant of the Grignard reaction - a very notable reaction in organic synthesis. Following on from previous research in the Gilheany group, this research involves expanding substrate scope, optimizing conditions of the reaction and investigating the mechanism of the reaction. In addition to research, I also undertake tutorials and lab demonstrations for undergraduate students in both organic and inorganic chemistry. As part of my further education in my PhD program, I attend Dublin Chemistry seminars and lectures, which broaden my knowledge in organic and the broader discipline of chemistry. Show less

      Oct 2017 - Dec 2017
      Process Development Chemist

I undertook a 3 month placement in order to gain practical industry experience in the large scale synthesis of pharmaceutical targets. Responsibilities included:- Investigating issues which arose during the production of plant scale pharmaceutical drugs. This involved identifying the stumbling blocks of the process and studying their source, in order to successfully rectify the issue.- Creation of standard operating procedures for various activities ranging from operation of laboratory equipment to experimental procedures, in a clear and succinct manner- Maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment to ensure production continuity Show less
