Activities and Societies: Enhancement in the electromagnetic beam-plasma instability due to ion streaming at Extreme Plasma Physics- the theory and simulation team of the Group for Lasers and Plasmas of the Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear at Instituto Superior Técnico I have investigated the role of realistic ions on the growth rate of the current filamentation instability. I have derived a generalized dispersion relation including the ion contribution from the relativistic kinetic theory. The solution of the dispersion relation showed an enhanced instability growth rate due to the ion response. Activities and Societies: Generation of magnetic fields in plasmas at Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Physics Umea Sweden I have examined several aspects of waves and instabilities in magnetized and un-magnetized plasmas. The work also included the study of the new and purely growing modes in quantum-plasmas. I have investigated a new kind of purely growing instability, which can spontaneously create magnetic fields due to the equilibrium polaritonic flows in an ultra-cold quantum electron–positron/hole plasma. This study can be of importance in the field of semiconductor physics as well as in astrophysical… Show more I have examined several aspects of waves and instabilities in magnetized and un-magnetized plasmas. I studied several types of waves and instabilities in unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas. My first project dealt with the investigation of magnetic field fluctuations in relativistic electron-positron magneto-plasmas. The relevance of this work is closely related to astrophysical objects such as pulsars, micro-quasars, gamma-rays bursts, and active galactic nuclei and the results were published in Physics Letters A (N. Shukla and P. K. Shukla, Physics Letter A 362, 221 (2007)).
