      May 2016 - Oct 2016
      Napanee Shrike Recovery Biologist

I was the Napanee, Ontario area Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Biologist. I was responsible for population monitoring and life history data collection of the remaining wild LOSH population in the Napanee area. I conducted soft-releases of captive-reared LOSH at the Napanee release site and post-release monitoring. I completed Habitat Stewardship Activities (including grassland bird surveys). I entered the data from the summer's activities into Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access spreadsheets. I completed monthly reports on the activities and updates in the area. I was responsible for delegating and supervising the activities of a field assistant who worked on the project. After realizing a limitation in the current protocol methods, I piloted a project using time-lapse cameras to monitor the shrike at supplementary feeding corrals. The project was instrumental in detecting two Loggerhead Shrike individuals that would not have been otherwise detected, and the protocols developed will now be used in future years of the program. The results of the pilot project and my detailed report supported an ultimately successful grant application. To see more on the project, including my monthly blog posts, follow the link below.
