  • Education

    • Altrincham Boys Grammar School

      1972 - 1977
    • University of Nottingham

      1999 - 2001
Master of Arts (M.A. Research) French Renaissance Studies

Activities and Societies: Dramsoc, Nottingham Theatre Group, President French Society I did my BA at Nottingham and then followed up with my Masters at there as well. The M.A. looked at the theatre of Mademoiselle Desjardins, a prolific writer from the time of Moliere and Louis XIV, controversial in her time, almost forgotten outside academic circles. Fascinating, stimulating, challenging!

    • Central TV Nottingham - TV Workshop

      Jan 1983 - Jan 1986
      Visiting Tutor

I gave workshops in mime and movement - oh, and mask - to the workshop members very regularly (Ian smith called my contributions "specials"!). There was team teaching as well, with musicians, writers, at summer schools. Great fun and a real highlight.

    • BAC

      Jan 1992 - Jan 1992
      Dame Grosslady

I played Elizabeth's eccentric apothecary, originally Dario Fo's part. Her language, in the translation, was a brilliantly weird mixture of Scottish, Italian and English so I made her Welsh and called it Taffitalian... Huge fun and it got me my first agent! Plenty to be grateful for there, then.

    • Royal Shakespeare Company

      Mar 1995 - Nov 1996
      Company member

In that season, I was in The Relapse (Vanbrugh), The Painter of Dishonour (Calderon, trans. Johnstone), and Faust I & II (Goethe, trans Brenton). It was a seminal part of my life, I had a blast and learnt so much that it transformed my work radically. From going in as a player of small parts, I ended up as a singing soloist, had a part created for me and became an aerial artist on rope and trapeze. And I made some lifelong friends. Very special time and I'd love to go back!

    • Millennium Dome

      Aug 1999 - Dec 2000
      Soloist

Great place, huge buzz, played Dad and had the honour of playing a sequence to Father/Son by Peter Gabriel. The mauling the place received from peevish press and cowardly politicians means I no longer buy newspapers or have respect for the people we vote for (or not...). I was there and it was amazing.

    • Past Pleasures

      Jan 2005 - now

    • Sky/Mob

      Jan 2006 - Jan 2006
      The Hogfather

I played an Auditor in the feature film, but played Death in the Interactive featurettes called the Twelve Days of Hogwatch. These small films introducing Terry Pratchett's Discworld to people who didn't know it won a BAFTA. I'm very proud and grateful to Vadim at Mob and Paula Nightingale who directed the Interactive films for the chance to be in this groundbreaking film.

    • Gecko Theatre

      Jan 2010 - Jan 2010
