My undergraduate thesis- "Lights, Camera, Eyes: Walking and Urban Visibility" explored the design of safe places. I found that modernist planners sought to recreate the eyes-on-the-street effect through the liberal use of cameras and lights in urban spaces- with dismal results. This paper advocated for density, connectivity and mixed uses as the most effective tools to dissuade crime in the built environment.
