Young Women and Men of Promise program is designed to give middle school scholars a space to discuss, reflect on, and act upon issues that are relevant to them as youth. In weekly sessions, members will tackle issues of social justice through civic action and hip-hop. Young people involved in this program will develop leadership, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. Group leaders will expose participates to new environments and perspectives through cultural excursions and challenging discussion. The journey to developing a Young Woman/Man of Promise begins with a strong sense of self, which is centered on identity and developing an understanding of history. This process will culminate with a rites of passage that symbolizes a commitment to self, family, and both the local and global community. The Young Women of Promise will participate in their journey through civic action. As members of this group young women will identify an area of improvement within their surrounding community, educate themselves on this issues, problem solve around issues, and create/enact a plan of action that directly affects their community. This will encourage young ladies to see the power they hold as change agents. − Promote and encourage the healthy development of self esteem, self respect, and self confidence− Increase and enhance healthy decision making skills. − Develop and nurture skills needed to establish and attain personal and academic goals− Weekly two hour sessions− Monthly Mentor outings− Culminating Service Learning and Hip Hop projects− Various trips and outings related to curriculum− Leadership Retreat− Rites of Passage Closing Ceremony Show less
