  Our research goal is to study the nanoscale interactions between mercury, sulfide, and organic matter during early stages of precipitation and growth, and link their structural properties to bioavailability for anaerobic microbes and methylation potential. Mercury is hazardous in ecosystems when it is converted by anaerobic bacteria to methylmercury (the toxic form of the metal). Dissolved complexes, nanoclusters and nanoparticles of mercuric sulfides are the key species that control mercury solubility, transport, and bioavailability to anaerobic bacteria that produce methylmercury in soils and sediments. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) interferes with the precipitation of HgS (the form of Hg that tends to persist in anaerobic sediments) by complexing or capping multinuclear HgS clusters formed at the initial stages of precipitation. The association of these clusters with DOM results in alterations to the kinetics of cluster growth/ripening and aggregation of nanoparticles. Little is known regarding the identity and characteristics of these materials, particularly as they form in environmental settings where DOM greatly exceeds mercury concentration. Describing these compounds at the molecular and nanoscale level will provide insights to their persistence in the environment as well as their bioavailability to exposed organisms. Show less
