      During my ten years at LNEC, I performed site and lab testing of rock masses and rock fractures, in situ stress state testing, large flat jacks (LFJ) and borehole dilatometer(BHD), laboratory core and fracture testing, numerical modelling and analysis of tunnels in rock and soil, seismic analysis, modelling and analysis of urban and rock tunnels, modelling and analysis of concrete arch dams, field and laboratory tests, dam foundation stability, railway infrastructure, blast vibration analysis. I was involved, among other, in the following works: Venda Nova II cavern, Baixo Sabor dam (discontinuity analysis), Bemposta cavern (characterization of rock mass, blast vibration impact assessement), rehabilitation and reinforcement of the Rossio tunnel in Lisbon (seismic analysis), Leixões harbour deepening (vibration monitoring and modelling of attenuation), Alto Tamega dam (foundation stability). Did my PhD in blast vibration generation and propagation.Areas of expertise: - Static and dynamic analysis of tunnels and cavern excavations and dam foundations. - Blast vibration generation and propagation in rock masses. - Applied research in rock mass dynamics. - Numerical analysis using FEM, DEM and FDM.       I lead the Structural Engineering courses of the Architecture Masters degree, implementing novel learning strategies to lead students into a greater understanding of shapes and structures, through structural calculus and model building using cardboard, hardware-store materials, pasta, etc. (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/user/rresende).I've recently taken up exploring e-learning strategies (automatic testing and online video) and won an award for this work.

    • Awarded to Ricardo Resende
      Pedagogical Award (2nd place) ISCTE-IUL Dec 2016 This awards is given by ISCTE-IUL every year to distinguish exceptional cases of pedagogical innovation in curricular units. I was granted the 2nd place in my school with the work carried out in Structures II, where I employed a blend of online testing, e-learning videos and model construction to help students get a good understanding of truss structures behaviour.

      2014 Rocha Medal - first runner-up International Society for Rock Mechanics Sep 2013 The Rocha Medal is awarded every year to an outstanding doctoral thesis in the field of Rock Mechanics. The thesis is selected by a Committee appointed for the purpose, starting with the 2010 award, one or two runner up certificates (Proxime Accessit certificates) may also be awarded.
