Photograph, identify and catalogue core samples in the PA State Core Library. Assist the Field Mapping division, including: locating outcrops using LiDAR, satellite images and topographic maps, measuring strike and dip, recording GPS location, describing lithology, structure, field context and general paleontology. Log and describe core samples and chippings from air rotary, diamond core and sonic core drilling rigs.

      Geotechnical Field Technician

Oversee soil borings and complete boring logs. Test percolation, infiltration and soil compaction and moisture in the field. Carry out proctor, Atterberg limits and falling-head permeameter tests in the lab. Test concrete compressive strength in the lab. Core concrete slabs for post-placement strength testing. Test concrete slump, temperature and air content in the field.

    • University of Maryland

      Sept 2017 - Aug 2021

Research integrating geochemistry, petrology and field methods.Constrained the timescales of fluid migration in subduction zones using lithium isotope measurements combined with finite difference and Monte Carlo models of reactive transport. Leveraged apatite rare earth element and halogen chemistry to investigate elemental mobility and fluid-rock reaction. Developed a method for in situ measurement of Li isotopes and robust characterization of uncertainty using regression models. Physical Geology LaboratorySedimentation and Stratigraphy

      Program Manager

Manage a team of 15 mentors and oversee five successful grant applications totaling $2500 to local government and university organizations to fund the program.Articulate yearly learning outcomes, design weekly curriculum and organize quarterly field trips. Examples of hands-on activities and field trips include: nursing and planting native flora in local wetlands, measuring local tree cores to learn about past rainfall, and building waterwheels to understand energy production.

    • University of Washington

      Aug 2021 - now
      NSF Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. William Hoover has been awarded an NSF EAR postdoctoral fellowship ($174,000) to carry out research and educational plans at the University of Washington alongside mentor Dr. Cailey Condit. Dr. Hoover will investigate the role of water-rock reaction in producing the enigmatic seismic phenomena known as episodic tremor and slip (ETS) that can precede large, damaging earthquakes, particularly along subduction zone faults. This study will focus on rocks from Catalina Island (Southern California) exhumed from depths characteristic of ETS in modern subduction zones (e.g., Cascadia in Washington and Oregon). Integrated macro- and micro-scale structural and geochemical analysis will reveal how rock alteration by fluid flow yields deformation behavior characteristic of ETS. This work will provide important direct observations of rocks from ETS source regions and inform modern subduction zone monitoring and seismic research. Show less
