As a team, we addressed the challenging topic of improving the passenger journey during planned and unplanned events. For the competition, I facilitated discussion within our group and challenged their ideas to ensure that our solution to the problem was innovative, achievable and easy to implement. Based on the ongoing problem of passenger distribution upon the platform and within carriages, we addressed the issue of overcrowding and discussed different alternatives to improve the passenger experience. Our solution was short and simple: implementing clear and visual indicators to communicate the current capacity of the individual carriages. By doing so, theoretically, the passenger behaviour will be altered and those boarding will distribute themselves over several carriages thus reducing dwell times during passenger boarding and alighting.
