      MCB63x: Principles of Biochemistry integrated an introduction to the structure of macromolecules and a biochemical approach to cellular function. This is an upper level undergraduate course. It covers the equivalent of one semester of biochemistry. Topics addressing protein function included enzyme kinetics, the characterisation of major metabolic pathways and their interconnection into tightly regulated networks, and the manipulation of enzymes and pathways with mutations or drugs. An exploration of simple cells (red blood cells) to more complex tissues (muscle and liver) was used as a framework to discuss the progression in metabolic complexity. I developed problem solving and analytical skills that are more generally applicable to the life sciences.New in this version of the course, I explored how alteration of these metabolic pathways relates to the development and progression of some human diseases. Model organism, which translational applications are highly relevant in today’s Singapore greying population landscape and the societal issues/ costs associated with it. I also researched on UPR activation/ ER Stress as per observed during fungal host-pathogen interactions (HPI).
