I gained an insight into how to apply and the benefits of an apprenticeship in which they can be competitive and difficult to get into but prove themselves to be worth it.

  During my time at this in-person legal work experience at the Immigration Advice Bureau I was able to shadow a lawyer. I performed legal research for clients that were applying for a Visa and assisted with preparing, filling out and reviewing client applications. I was able to pro-actively participate in maintaining clients' legal documents. This helped me gain an insight into the work I would carry out and this furthered my interest.

  I had the pleasure of taking part in Fragomen's immigration school which consisted of 4 sessions. During these sessions I was able to learn about a career in Immigration law such as the work and the pathway. I was able to learn that Fragomen is a global law firm and had an insight into what that entails such as the related tech and innovation. This opportunity was one I will not forget due to it guiding me into how to approach job interviews and applications.   I took part in the Charles Russell Speechlys law event and found this to be very informative. I had the opportunity to gain insight into the different routes and stages of a solicitor apprenticeship while hearing from current apprentices who shared their experiences. They stated Charles Russell Speechlys was a firm that was inclusive with a vibrant nature and spoke about the opportunities they were given over the years. Hester Thompson, the early careers advisor went on to explain how CRS works all over the world and the firm collectively speaks over 40 languages which shows that everyone is welcome and should find comfort in the firm. I learnt when applying to apprenticeships all work experience is valued, even if it it is non-legal experience. Show less

  During this insight I discovered what it is like to work for an international law firm. Bird & Bird has 32 offices across the world which are sector focused. The firm offers a wide range of opportunities for young people such as; the apprenticeship route, scholarships, mentoring opportunities and much more. This helped me understand their investment into enabling young people to enter the legal sector. They emphasised the benefits of an apprenticeship such as, the work environment, the opportunities to move up, the networking and getting paid while you learn.   Fragomen Immigration School

  Fragomen's immigration school consisted of two sessions each lasting two hours. These sessions allowed me to gain valuable insights into immigration law, law as a whole, and global mobility. The immigration law school guided me through pursuing a career in law at a global firm and helped me prepare for when apprenticeship interviews would be approaching. I was able to gain a first-hand account of the inner workings of a law firm by hearing from speakers from the legal profession and also clients they work with. The thing that particularly stood out to me was the importance of corporate social responsibility and the significance of building a sustainable, well-managed, and profitable business. Show less

  After taking part in the Bird & Bird virtual apprentice event my knowledge was strengthened about the process of getting into an apprenticeship, tips on how to do so, and the roles of an apprentice. I have always had a passion for both working and learning simultaneously and I found although you are presented with many challenges you are well-supported in learning from those around you to deal with them and you are able to reach out without any judgement.

  Get into law event

  I joined the Young Professionals Get into law event which involved an introduction by Dan Miller the founder and CEO of Young Professionals followed by the recruitment panel with the following speakers, Bird and Bird: Chloe Johnson, Farrer & Co: Rebecca Reese, Freeths: Hannah Bramley, Fragomen: Grace Baker and Charles Russell Speechlys: Joanna Stevens. I appreciated the opportunity to be a part of this event as I was able to hear some valuable top tips and gain some insight into the mistakes that are often made during the application process which allowed me to learn from them but what stood out to me particularly was in regards to resilience. It is important to remember this is a competitive field and it requires thick skin and the strength to carry on even after several rejections. I've learnt the field of law is so much more diverse and complex than we anticipate and there's not just one door into it. Show less
