    • Robbie Fluid Engineering

      Aug 2014 - Aug 2014
Voluntary Work Experience - Mechanical Engineering

During my time at RFE I learned about the basics of fluid in engineering and how they affect everything we do. I also done many practical activates. I was involved in making over 100 different sized pipes for a fleet of road sweepers which involved cutting the pipes and swagging fittings on the ends of them. I also got to use pressure testing rigs to make sure they could withstand the pressure that would be going through them. There was also many smaller things that I done to make the workshop run smoothly such as marking in deliveries and putting them away and keeps the shop tidy and safe for everyone to use. Show less

    • Mott MacDonald

      Oct 2014 - Oct 2014
Work Experience - Civil Engineering Consultant

During my time at Mott MacDonald I went through a full project of what civil engineering consultants do during their job. I stated off by looking at a brief for a new train station shelter and came up with a couple designs. I then learned about the basics of structures and foundations and had to work out how many beams I would need to support my structure successfully. I also had to learn about what a geotech engineering would do with in his role and how this would affect the type of foundations needed. After this I need to make final CAD drawing of my terminal and 3D models using Google sketch up and Civils 3D before costing the whole terminal up.Main Duties• Successfully completed a project to redevelop Queen Street Station under strict time conditions.• Used Civils 3D software to produce 3D models of real life projects like Queen Street and Buchannan Galleries. • Arup

      Nov 2014 - Nov 2014
      Work Experience - Engineering Consultant

When I was at Arup in Glasgow I spent time with the various different engineering teams. I learned the basics of mechanical and electrical engineering within building designs. The task was to re-design my house on Auto CAD and use Revit software to model a heating and lighting system to go around the house. This allowed me to perform heat loss calculations. With my time with the structural engineers we worked on real life projects like the Queen Street and Buchanan Galleries redevelopment and used 3D models to find out where the stress points would be in different conditions. I also learned the basics about rail engineering and work with the specials Arup acoustic team on one of their many worldwide projects. I also got a chance to work with the Façade and Fire engineering teams where I also learned about the basics of what they do on a daily basis.Main Duties• Received an introduction into the wide variety of engineering disciplines Arup offers from Mechanical and Electrical, Rail and Infrastructure, Acoustics, Structures and Façade engineering.• Develop a beginners understanding of each discipline which has provided me with an excellent bank of knowledge to aid me when entering a Civil Engineering role.• Successfully completed a project, which consisted of redesigning my house to perform engineering heat/loss and light calculations on it. Nov 2014 - Nov 2014
Work Experience - Civil Engineer Consultant

At WSP I was working with various team members, mostly apprentices, from all different areas of engineering. I received a great overview of the type of work I would be doing on a daily basis as a civil engineering apprentice. This further developed my interest to pursue this as a career. Along my time was short I managed to further enhance my CAD and Revit skills under the aid of qualified engineers as I helped out with a few small projects - mainly bridges and highways.Main Duties• Worked alongside apprentices to receive in invaluable insight into the day to day operations of a Civil Engineering apprentice – this helped to further develop my passion for engineering and eagerness to become one.• Received help with CAD and Revit software from well-established engineers to further develop my existing knowledge of the software.• Implemented my existing knowledge of engineering practices to successfully help with problems and projects that were being worked on. Work Experience - Civil Engineer

During my time I was on site with Civil Engineers at a gauging project in Edinburgh. This gave me an insight into the practical side of civil engineering and what the contractors’ process is once they have received the consultants’ plans. I helped with various tasks such as levelling and surveying the site to costing up the full project with excel. Health and Safety was also a big part of the day to day operations on site, and I gained a good overview of the danger that can occur at any time as I took part in a health and safety briefing.Main Duties• Received an insight into the contractor’s side of Civil Engineering, at a gauging project in Edinburgh, which gave me an overview of the full construction process.• Developed an overall understanding of the levelling and surveying process through a hands-on onsite lesson conducted with the site surveyor.• Helped with the overall costing of the project• Took part in a weekly Health and Safety briefing/discussion and shared my ideas about what aspects of the site could be improved safety wise.
