      Actuarial Analyst (Summer Intern)

In this two-month internship at MLC Actuarial Control, I was involved in the actuarial integration of MLC and AVIVA. I was responsible for conducting a lapse investigation on AVIVA products, quantifying the differences in methodology and results between the two companies' methods, as well as developing the groundwork to allow future MLC lapse investigations to include AVIVA products.Through this internship, I gained extremely valuable experience in practical life insurance work and became acquainted with various actuarial software such as DCS, GLEAN and Prophet. • ActewAGL

      May 2012 - Dec 2013
      Asset Strategy Analyst

At ActewAGL, I provided statistical analysis supporting the development of asset management strategies/plans and regulatory submissions. In particular, I was responsible for developing load demand forecasts and survival models for equipment lifetime and reliability. In this role, I was allowed valuable start-to-end involvement in projects, commencing with extensive independent research, developing models (often having to deal with incomplete or censored datasets), talking to subject-matter experts to verify the plausibility/suitability of the models, testing/validating, documenting/reporting the outcomes, and finally presenting the reports (both written and spoken) to various internal/external stakeholders. My communication/people skills were developed through my involvement in active negotiations with several parties, e.g. liaising with other engineers, representing the company in meetings with the Australian Energy Regulator, as well as explaining the methodology/implications of my modelling to consultants and auditors. As a by-product of my work for the company, I wrote a short paper together with my manager, which summarized my research and work on the area of applying actuarial techniques such as survival modelling/life table analysis on physical assets. This paper was presented at the 2013 Asset Management Conference in Melbourne and was well-received by the audience. Finally, at ActewAGL I also took on a secondary role of data mining and analysis, as well as improving the efficiency of business processes by writing programs (e.g. in VBA/R) to automate tasks. In addition, I served as application administrator for the company’s newly implemented asset management database RIVA. Show less

    • National Australia Bank

      Jan 2014 - May 2015
      Performance and Risk Analyst

My role as a Performance and Risk Analyst comprised of the following aspects:• Compile, measure, analyse and produce reports on the investment performance of large institutional funds (relative to industry benchmarks).• Conduct complex attribution and risk-return analysis on fund performance across various fund managers employed by institutional funds.• Frequently reconcile and migrate large amounts of data across various databases.• Attend to multiple client queries promptly and professionally.Apart from the standard job scope above, I also added value to the business unit by distinguishing myself as the "problem solver" of the team and the technical expert for technological and spreadsheet/macros issues. I proactively looked for ways to streamline and improve the efficiency of work processes, and was recognized for my success in doing this.In addition to the normal work responsibilities, I was also actively involved in non-core workplace activities, e.g. coordinating archiving activities, being a process improvement "Kaizen" representative for the department, and also being a member of the social committee responsible for coordinating and planning social events across the broader business. • Vanguard

      Jun 2015 - Nov 2016
      Investment Data Analyst

As an Investment Data Analyst at Vanguard, my job scope includes:• Maintaining multiple data processes to ensure that accurate data is successfully/promptly fed downstream to various stakeholders such as portfolio managers, traders, performance analysts etc.• Regularly preparing a variety of risk reports/dashboards/metrics which play a significant role in higher-level decision making.• Carrying out ad-hoc projects to cater for new/changed data requirements such as the on-boarding of new clients or regulation.I also showcase my technical aptitude and analytic mindset in this role through my swiftness in developing a deep understanding of a number of databases/applications, and subsequently taking the initiative to recommend/implement process improvements. For e.g., I helped to build a graphical dashboard which reflects the relative punctuality of various index vendors, assisting in the pinpointing and targeting of problem vendors. I was also heavily involved in the running/testing of a new asset management system, where I identified several defects/risks and recommended some important enhancements. Another significant contribution is my role in developing/coding an analytical tool for the Fixed Income desk, which analyses the trade hit rate of various counterparties and generates monthly reports that depict the periodic trends. My SQL skills have also been further strengthened through this role, which requires an extensive use of SQL Server to query, access and modify various databases. Finally, I am also currently serving as the inter-departmental Kudos representative for 2016, whose responsibilities include organizing and planning quarterly social/team-bonding events.
