      Jul 1983 - Aug 1985
      Oceanographer & Marine Geologist

Researcher with USGS Pacific Marine Geology Group. Arctic Coastal & Shelf Studies. I worked with Peter Barnes and Erk Reimnitz, Ed Kempema and Others. We cruised the inner coastal waters and continental shelf of the Alaskan Arctic - Chuckchi and Beaufort Seas. I was tasked with producing a base map comparing shoreline/coastal changes (1950-1980) to investigate coastal erosion. The maps we produced were awesome and pointed to really strange phenomena - coastal segments that showed nearly a km of retreat over 30 yrs. we visited the entire Alaskan Arctic coast and nearshore to investigate and discovered amazing processes. This was a major highlight of my early career as an explorer and oceanographer. Climate change was on our minds and since then the Arctic has become evermore important. Show less

    • Global Environment Project Institute

      Sept 1992 - Aug 1994
      Project Coordinator

Coordinator and co-editor of "EarthTime", subsequently published as "E2 Environment & Education", a school environmental audit curriculum focusing on energy, water, food systems, landscaping and re & pre-cycling. A very cool program that engaged youth in evaluating their own academic institution and making rational proposals for change, with full cost-benefit analyses. This project was funded by GEPI and the Tides Foundation and launched my career as an educator as well as that of my colleague who went on to work with the GLOBE Program... And I have been working with GLOBE ever since! Show less

    • University of Idaho

      Sept 1999 - Jul 2004
      Assistant Professor

Co-Director & Principal Architect: Lewis & Clark Rediscovery Project, US Dept Ed - funded Techology Innovation Challenge Grant, $7.5M / 5 yr, National Program for Teacher Professional Development. Follow-on funding from NASA brought our budget up to >$10M. Awesome experience in project coordination and dedication to moving resources and funding into the hands of practicing K12 teachers. In the end, I was fortunate to be able to travel the entire Lewis&Clark Trail many times, view and imagine the landscape, resources, culture all over this great country, and push for inquiry into the nature of change. This experience solidified my belief that we can learn much, if not all we need by exploring ideas, concepts, issues in the context of our own known local landscapes. Show less
