  The Niles Township Fine Arts Department was chosen in 2007 by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National School Board Association as the #1 Fine Arts Department in the United States of America. Niles Township was the only public school district to receive this award in the past 18 years that was not a high school for the performing arts.My teaching responsibilties consisted of three Concert Bands, Beginning Band, Digital Piano Class, Guitar Class and an Electronic Music Course. Total student enrollment in the academic classes ranged from 180-200 students per semester. The Band also provided members for the Orchestra program. The extra curricular responsibilities included Jazz Band, Pep Band, Musicals, Voluntary Marching Band, Fall/Winter Competitive Guard program, Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble,concert tours, and field trips. Supervisory responsibilities included a 9-member private teaching staff, 10-member marching band staff, 3-member paraprofessional sectional coaching staff, 5-member assessment team, Marching Band Parents Organization, and a Music Parents Association. I met regularly with the five feeder school Band Directors for the purposes of recruiting and articulation, which included a Junior HIgh Band Day performance at Niles West.I was directly involved in writing the curriculum for the Concert Bands, Percussion Class, Digital Piano Class, and the Electronic Music Class. The curriculum for the Concert Bands is unlike anything ever seen before and will be of interest for any music educator trying to find a way to accomplish the mandates in the new State of Illinois PERA law.During my career as a music educator, I supervised over 30 student teachers and clinical observers from the numerous music schools in Illinois. There were student teachers and clinical observers from DePaul University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northwestern University, North Park College, University of Illinois and VanderCook College of Music.
