Master's degree biochemistry & biotechnology magna cum laude

For my masterthesis, I worked in the department of molecular microbiology and biotechnology on a project where we tested the anti-Candida activity of a collection of essential oils and their components against the two most common pathogenic yeasts in humans, namely C. albicans and C. glabrata. The screening was performed using two different assays and we elucidated the effect of assay-dependent parameters. In addition, we studied the mode-of-action with live-cell biosensors.

Bachelor's degree biochemistry & biotechnology cum laude

For my bachelor's thesis I worked in the department of animal physiology and neurobiology on a project to separate tau isoforms, involved in Alzheimer's disease, using two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis and I learned how to analyse these gels using mass spectrometry.

      Feb 2016 - Jun 2016
Research internship (biomedical research institute biomed)

I did an internship at the biomedical research institute of the university of Hasselt. During this semester, I worked on a project to study the effect of a treatment for multiple sclerosis on the adaptive immune system under guidance of the immunology research group. I learned different techniques including the isolation of subpopulations of cells from blood samples, cell culture anti-body stainings and FACS. In addition, I learned to plan your own project, manage deadlines, communicate results and I developed my problem solving skills. Show less

    • Integrated dna technologies

      Aug 2016 - Aug 2016
      Production scientist assistent (summer job)

During this student job in summer, I got the opportunity to gain insight in DNA synthesis, gene construction and a variety of other molecular biology products often used in research. I was mainly responsible for the maintenance of all laboratory materials and I had to support the staff with their daily tasks. Moreover, it contributed to my ability to multitask and work under pressure.

      Oct 2017 - Sept 2021
      Phd researcher (fwo aspirant)

During my PhD I studied the consequences of oropharyngeal candidiasis, which is a superficial infection of the oral cavity most often caused by the fungus Candida albicans. Considering that the human oral cavity is a densely colonized area harboring a tremendous number of microorganisms, C. albicans is in close interaction with other commensal bacteria and fungi during infection. A synergistic interaction is observed with the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Studies using a mouse model of oral co-infections with C. albicans and S. aureus showed that mice infected with both species, were susceptible to a systemic S. aureus infection and exhibited severe signs of disease. In my PhD, we aimed to provide insights into the infectious synergism between C. albicans and S. aureus in the murine model of oral co-infection. Moreover, we investigated two innovative strategies for the treatment of C. albicans – S. aureus co-infections and explored the use of non-invasive imaging methods to further elucidate the mechanism of infectious synergism in an in vivo context. • University of maryland baltimore

      Jan 2018 - Mar 2018
      Research stay abroad

I went for a 3 month- research stay to the Jabra-Rizk lab, under guidance of professor Mary Ann Jabra-Rizk, which is part of the Baltimore Fungal Biology Center. The research in the Jabra-Rizk laboratory aims to investigate the host and pathogenfactors that play a role in the transition of C. albicans from commensal to pathogen. The lab has an outstanding expertise in the clinical and therapeutic implications of polymicrobialbiofilms. Therefore, they developed several rodent models which are necessary to determine theimpact of the interspecies interactions in these polymicrobial biofilms in vivo. During this research stay I was ably to learn different animal models to study polymicrobial biofilms. Show less

      Aug 2019 - Sept 2019
      Research stay abroad

I went to the lab of professor Bastiaan Krom which is a part of ACTA (Amsterdam) for 6 weeks during my PhD. This laboratory has an expertise in oral microbial biofilms and interspecies interactions. During this research stay I learned to work with the bioflux system to test adhesion between different species and I have learned cell culture and in vitro phagocytosis experiments.
