Experience

NIDR, National Institutes of Health
Sept 1978 - Nov 1981Postdoctoral FellowBasic and clinical research on virus-induced diabetes. Abner Louis Notkins, Mentor. Interdisciplinary research with colleagues from the Pathology, Endocrinology, Virology, Immunology laboratories.

University of Pisa
Jan 1980 - Jan 1984Associate Professor of MicrobiologyMedical Microbiology with clinical responsibilities

University of Sassari
Nov 1985 - Oct 1989Professor of Medical MicrobiologyTeaching, Research, and Clinical duties

University of Sassari Medical School
Nov 1985 - Oct 1989Director, Lab. Medical MicrobiologyLaunched a new Experimental Microbiology lab progressing from concept to implementation of activities. Organized research teams, equipment, plants, IT services. Research focused on the interferon system; mycobacterial pathogenesis; drug resistance determinants; monoclonal antibodies. The lab was accredited in two years. Collaborated with Marcello Siniscalco (human geneticist) and microbiologists from the Agriculture and Veterinary Schools to implement the first molecular assays in the Sardinia island (1987), which resulted in the launch of the Molecular Genetics Center of Tramariglio, Sassari. Positive budget margins reaching 10% by the 3rd year of operation. Show less

Ospedale Santa Chiara, Pisa
Jan 1989 - Oct 1991Virology ConsultantRebuilt lab activities introducing research standards and quality control procedures. Clinical consulting regarding HIV and enterovirus infections. Teaching to graduated students of the Dental School. Collaboration with the Pathology Department in the area of HIV infection and related malignancies. Identified the relevance of the interferon system in protecting against mammary tumors in mice, and demonstrated that different cytokines are produced by normal human mammary cells but are absent in mammary cancer. Proved that HIV infects human mammary cells and that lactation can lead to virus transmission. Collaboration with the Bioengineering Department to evaluate biocompatibility of novel materials using in vitro models. Show less

Jan 1989 - Jan 1991Professor of Medical MicrobiologyMedical Microbiology, Research and Teaching

University of Pavia
Feb 1991 - Jan 1998Professor of Medical MicrobiologyRevitalized an out-dated clinical microbiology lab by implementing molecular techniques, DNA sequencing, novel culture methods, updated immunology assays. Monitored hospital infections and drug resistance across hospital wards. Published clinical reports and papers on translational medicine progressing into interdisciplinary research. Turned around profitability, developing margins of up to 15% out of a tapped budget. Re-engineered processes including quality control and accreditation systems.

Ospedale di Circolo e Fondazione Macchi
Jan 1994 - Oct 2018Retired Director, Clinical Microbiology LaboratoryMedically-qualified Clinical and Research Microbiologist. Licensed for practicing Medicine and Clinical Microbiology in the EU and Switzerland. Experience in culture-based and molecular microbiology achieved in tertiary care Academic Medical Centers. Contributed to the mission of his Departments via participation in research and teaching programs, training of residents and medical students, mentoring of trainees, continuing medical education, infection control, design of tenders for diagnostic systems. In addition to clinical work, developed a variety of basic and translational research programs, served as Director of Ph.D. programs in Medicine, acted as mentor to graduate students. He is collaborating with the Division of Infectious Diseases, ICUs, Internal Medicine, Surgical, Neurologic, and Pediatric Wards of his Medical Center. Leads a team of 30 FTEs for diagnosis, research, teaching, and is responsible of financial (6 ME turnover), quality, and strategic management. Expertise in automated microbiology (BD and Kiestra systems). He is serving as Director of the Ph.D. program in "Translational Medicine".His lab produces half million tests/year in bacteriology, virology, infectious serology, mycology, parasitology. Lab services have been increasing 5-10% per year with a 10-15% net margin per year. Reduction of hospital infections and hospital stay upon implementation of rapid diagnostics and information technology. In 2015, his laboratory has been renewed with state-of-the art technology and enhanced safety levels.Current research: disorders with possible viral etiology (type 1 diabetes, post-polio syndrome, chronic cardiomyopathy); molecular microbiology. Collaboration with international research groups with funding from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the European Polio Union, The University of Tokyo, the Italian Ministry of Health.
