    • University of Sassari Medical School

      Nov 1985 - Oct 1989
      Director, Lab. Medical Microbiology

Launched a new Experimental Microbiology lab progressing from concept to implementation of activities. Organized research teams, equipment, plants, IT services. Research focused on the interferon system; mycobacterial pathogenesis; drug resistance determinants; monoclonal antibodies. The lab was accredited in two years. Collaborated with Marcello Siniscalco (human geneticist) and microbiologists from the Agriculture and Veterinary Schools to implement the first molecular assays in the Sardinia island (1987), which resulted in the launch of the Molecular Genetics Center of Tramariglio, Sassari. Positive budget margins reaching 10% by the 3rd year of operation. Show less

    • Ospedale Santa Chiara, Pisa

      Jan 1989 - Oct 1991
      Virology Consultant

Rebuilt lab activities introducing research standards and quality control procedures. Clinical consulting regarding HIV and enterovirus infections. Teaching to graduated students of the Dental School. Collaboration with the Pathology Department in the area of HIV infection and related malignancies. Identified the relevance of the interferon system in protecting against mammary tumors in mice, and demonstrated that different cytokines are produced by normal human mammary cells but are absent in mammary cancer. Proved that HIV infects human mammary cells and that lactation can lead to virus transmission. Collaboration with the Bioengineering Department to evaluate biocompatibility of novel materials using in vitro models. Show less

      Feb 1991 - Jan 1998
      Professor of Medical Microbiology

Revitalized an out-dated clinical microbiology lab by implementing molecular techniques, DNA sequencing, novel culture methods, updated immunology assays. Monitored hospital infections and drug resistance across hospital wards. Published clinical reports and papers on translational medicine progressing into interdisciplinary research. Turned around profitability, developing margins of up to 15% out of a tapped budget. Re-engineered processes including quality control and accreditation systems.
