      The “Alta Scuola Politecnica” (ASP) is a school of excellence involving Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino. During the two years ASP program it has been combined an in-depth (vertical) with an interdisciplinary (horizontal) formation. For instance, I followed six full-immersion, one-week ASP courses aimed to develop interdisciplinary expertise covering the fields of decision making, innovation, management, global changes, and modeling in science. In parallel, a two-year ASP multidisciplinary project has been developed in a student team. The project aimed to develop a wireless sensor network to monitor delicate aquatic environments such as coral reefs.       I studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) by using Raman and UV-Visible spectroscopies.

      I was involved in the study of Aluminum doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) thin films for photovoltaic applications. AZO thin films have been deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) focusing on different morphologies such as compact and nanostructured tree-like. An in-depth characterization by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy has been completed, analyzing also the effects of annealing treatments.

      I worked titanium oxide (TiO2) films for photovoltaic applications, especially for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) applications. TiO2 films have been deposited by vapor phase technique accurately tuning the micro-structure. DSSCs have been fabricated and characterized in terms of light harvesting efficiency.Collaboration with University of Milano Bicocca (UniMib, PlasmaPrometo Institute - Italy)

      The PhD program has been completed under the co-supervision of the Universite' Grenoble Alpes (UGA, France) and the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL, Belgium) in the framework of the International Doctoral School in Functional Materials for Energy, Information Technology and Health (IDS-FunMat).The project aimed to characterize mechanical properties of thin ZrNi metallic glass films having different thicknesses and compositions in order to study mechanical size-effects and to understand the relationship atomic structure - mechanical properties.Specifically, I'm involved in the:• deposition of thin ZrNi metallic glass films;• characterization of structural and mechanical properties of ZrNi films on a Si substrate and freestanding;• modeling the effect of the composition on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties;• modeling the effect of thickness on the mechanical properties, identifying the origin of size effects;Collaboration network:University of Paris XIII (LSPM Lab.);University of Toulouse (CEMES-CNRS Lab.);University of Rennes I (LARMAUR Lab.);Univeristy of Savoie (SYMME Lab.);University of Antwerp (EMAT Lab.).       I currently lead the group of 'Thin Films & Nanostructured Materials' https://www.mpie.de/3840033/thin_films_a_nanostructured_materialsThe the mission of this group is to synthetize novel nanostructured thin films with high performances as required for advanced applications such as micro-/nanoelectronics, energy production, sensors and wear protection.The scientific projects involve:Project I: Electrical properties across grain boundaries of metallic thin films● Synthesis of polycrystalline metallic thin films and the study of the electrical resistivity across the grain boundaries (GBs) investigating different crystallographic structures, orientations of the neighboring grains as well as the effect of the temperature.● Development of the set-up to measure in-situ SEM the electrical resistivity across GBs.Project II : Study of the correlation between the electrical properties of ceramic materials and defects induced by nano-mechanical testing● Analysis of the electrical properties of TiO2 and SrTiO2 as a function of the local dislocation density.Project III: Synthesis and mechanical characterization of novel thin film metallic glass and study of the thermomechanical behavior● Synthesis of nanostructured Zrx-TL100-x (TL= Cu, Ni, Co late transition metals) with controlled porosity and composition.● Micro- and nano-mechanical characterization and study of the thermomechanical behavior @ T<Tg and of the crystallization kinetics @ T>Tg.Project IV: Study of thermal dewetting behavior of Co-Cu thin films● Synthesis of Cox-Cu100-x thin films with controlled morphology and composition.● Investigation of the thermal properties and dewetting behavior.Project V : Synthesis of novel Thin Film High Entropy Alloy (TF-HEAs) with enhanced mechanical properties and thermal stability● Development of multi layers with enhanced mechanical properties● Analysis of mechanical properties at high temperatures Voir moins
