X-tec communications ltd
Aug 1987 - Jun 1990Senior field service engineerInstallation, maintenance, protocol level fault diagnosis and component level bench repair of a range of manufacturers equipment including Macrodata Protocol Converters (IBM3270, ICL CO3, HP VIP7700, McDonnel Douglas, Burroughs), Asynchronous data switches, Modems, Stat Muxes andTDMs.

Tricom plc
Jun 1990 - nowBench repair engineerTricom was a manufacturer of Modems and a general reseller of data communications equipment. As a bench repair engineer I worked on a wide range of modems muxes, ISDN TAs, routers, bridges from a range of manufacturers- Component level repair- Bench testing- Technical support to field engineers- Training of bench engineers in data comms technologies.

Cable & wireless
Jul 2000 - Jul 2010Network specialistAs a member of theCable &Wireless Network Specialist team I worked alongside many highly talented engineers serving as a pool of technical resources for the rest of the organisation. My varied duties included:- Project Engineering - Integration of standard C&W MPLS/BGP VPN services into customer networks, normally requiring bespoke edge solutions. This involved integrating services such as Internet access, QoS, Remote Site Access via Internet Gateway, additional IPSec security, and extended from Pre-Sales Support through Detailed Design, Proof of Concept Testing, Infrastructure Build, Configuration Testing, Configuration Management, Network Integration/Migration and UAT to ongoing 3rd line support.- Assure Support - Fault diagnosis and problem management escalated from the Field Services support team. Because of the global reach of C&W's network a lot of fault diagnosis was done remotely relying on tools such as IP accounting, access-list logging and netflow cache data. On-site I deployed tools such as Wireshark, Network Observer, passive data collectors such as PRTG and nTop and active testing tools such as Nmap, Iperf and Cisco SAA to diagnose network performance isues.- Professional Services - Providing design, installation and maintenance services for customers' own network infrastructure. Advising on provision of multiple redundant routing, bandwidth requirements and QoS provision to optimise VOIP, Video Conferencing and critical client application data. Providing advice and assistance in optimising firewall rules.- Engineer Training - Focusing on practical "hands-on" labs intended to get engineers to think for themselves rather than simply trying to fill their heads with facts.During my time at C&W I was studying for the Microsoft MCSE when I got the opportunity to study for the Cisco CCIE R&S. I passed the written and lab exams in 2001.I also had the opportunity to extend my experience into Linux, with a focus on Network Services and monitoring. Kevesebb megjelenítése

Ingenium technical services
Jul 2010 - nowDirector and principal consultantI coming to to the end of a contract as a Design and Implementation Engineer for Airbus Defence and Space (previously EADS Astrium). This role is projected to run through to September of 2017.I will be available for new contracts so please get in touch if you would like to discuss a potential position.

Nottingham city council
Aug 2010 - nowConsulting network specialistNetwork Consultancy - 1 week until 03/07/2010Extended to 10/07/2010Extended again to 17/07/2010I was brought into Nottingham City Council to assist with a Data Centre Migration the day before it was due. Having dealt with initial issues related to Port Channeling on the 3750E's it became clear that the network to which the Data Centre was being migrated was not in fact even designed. The role therefore involved a very rapid development of a L3 routed core design to replace the extant L2 core. I was then asked to stay on for a number of weeks assisting with troubleshooting of migration issues related to new cabling and new core switches, port channelling issues to servers, ASA rules and redundancy, ACE load balancers and assistance with future design planning. Dimension data
Apr 2011 - nowLead systems engineerLead Systems Engineer Responsible for the delivery of a Campus LAN for the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre serving the Olympic development at Stratford.I took over this position as Lead Systems Engineer late in the project life-cycle after differences with the previous incumbent left the project running behind schedule with no Technical Lead. I went on to bring the project back on schedule and to a timely and successful conclusion. The project provided a Campus wide network to carry all site services including data and voice for Centre Management, fire and flood alarm systems, access controls, heating and air conditioning controls, lighting controls, lift and escalator controls, IPTV, multicast video for advertising, promotion and events, wayfinding and location services. The project consists of Nexus 7010 Core, 120+ 3750E & G switch stacks, Redundant ASA 5580 and 5510, Redundant Checkpoint IPS390s, 850+ LWAPS, 5508 WLCs and WCS, AAA, IPS and MARS appliances. Solarwinds Orion Network Management and all ancilliary DHCP, DNS, TFTP/FTP, NTP, SMTP, SQL services with associated AntiVirus and Backup Applications. I also used Kiwi Cat Tools extensively due to the large number of devices involved. The role of Lead Systems Engineer required hands on commissioning and interim support of all the above with the assistance of a small team of engineers. Integration design of third parties onto the network, Team Management and mentoring and documentation of the implemented network. Kevesebb megjelenítése

Vocalink
Dec 2011 - nowNetwork architectVocaLink designs, builds and operates world-class payment systems and ATM switching platforms. They operate the UK national payments infrastructure, a national grid for payments.VocaLink's innovative, sustainable, and highly efficient payment services touch the lives of almost every person and business in the UK.They process over 90% of UK salaries, more than 70% of household bills and almost all state benefits.VocaLink technology powers the BACs and Direct Debit schemes as well as connecting the world's busiest network of over 65,000 ATMs through the LINK scheme. As a Network Architect working on this Critical National infrastructure I was responsible for the Design, Proof of Concept testing, Implementation and migration support of key areas of this business critical high availability network including -- A new highly resilient, cross site Internet Perimeter layer providing topology agnostic redundancy and on-demand live site switching.- Saving £170,000 in capital costs and thousands of pounds per year in operating costs by championing a move to Cisco Nexus 5500/2000 technology to provide a high port capacity, distributed switching platform.- Development of Build Standards for Cisco Nexus 7000 platform.- Designing and implementing a Route Health Injection solution on F5 load balancers using the Advanced Routing Module, allowing fully dynamic advertising of Virtual Servers. This is a key feature in meeting SLA's for reliability on Vocalinks Mobile Payments platform. Kevesebb megjelenítése

Production of documentation -High Level Design, Low Level Design, Service Assurance Testing, Service Acceptance Testing, Engineering Advisory and Training Documentation. While at Airbus I have also introduced automated configuration generation. This process eliminate config creep, provides version controlled consistency in build configurations, eliminates revisits due to "finger trouble" and allows site builds to be implemented by less qualified staff.
